Manchester City 2-1 Aston Villa: Nunes' late strike seals vital Man City win over Villans

In the 94th minute, Matheus Nunes scored a crucial goal that secured Manchester City a significant three points in their quest for UEFA Champions League qualification, as they achieved a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, thereby extending their winning streak to 15 consecutive home league matches against Villa.

Entering the match with five consecutive Premier League victories, Villa nearly achieved an ideal beginning at the Etihad when Marcus Rashford struck the post just 18 seconds into the game.

After overcoming that initial threat, City quickly found their rhythm and took the lead in the seventh minute, as Bernardo Silva delivered a powerful shot that eluded Emiliano Martinez following impressive offensive play from Omar Marmoush.

Unfazed by this setback, the visitors were soon presented with a prime opportunity to equalize when VAR ruled that Ruben Dias had fouled Jacob Ramsey in the penalty area.

After missing two penalties in their previous Premier League away match, Villa entrusted Rashford with the task, and the forward from Manchester successfully sent Stefan Ortega the wrong way to level the score for Unai Emery’s team.

As half-time neared, both teams continued to create opportunities, with Kevin De Bruyne's header being saved by Martinez, while Ortega rushed off his line to thwart Rashford.

Eager to extend their unbeaten streak to six matches across all competitions (W4, D2), City controlled possession at the beginning of the second half.

Clear opportunities were scarce, as James McAtee narrowly missed with an ambitious lob that went wide of the far post. Despite having limited possession, Villa remained a threat on counterattacks, with Rashford managing to round Ortega but ultimately shooting into the side-netting from a challenging angle.

The match remained delicately balanced as it approached the final 20 minutes, with both teams striving for a vital goal. City appeared to be lacking in creativity when Marmoush had a well-executed shot disallowed for offside, but the pivotal moment came in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Jeremy Doku's low cross was finished by Nunes at the back post.

This goal secured City's ninth home victory in 12 matches in 2025, while Villa missed the opportunity to achieve four consecutive Premier League games unbeaten away for the first time since the 2008/09 season.
