Manchester City 3-1 Bournemouth: De Bruyne bids emotional Etihad farewell, Rodri returns, and Champions League hope grows

Manchester City moved within touching distance of a UEFA Champions League spot after a 3-1 win over Bournemouth, in what proved to be an emotional farewell for club legend Kevin De Bruyne at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Omar Marmoush, Bernardo Silva, and debutant Nico ensured City grabbed all three points in front of a packed crowd of 52,487, keeping their top-four hopes alive with just one game remaining in the Premier League 2024/25 season.

De Bruyne's Emotional Send-off Steals the Spotlight

As chants of “Oh Kevin De Bruyne” echoed around the Etihad, the 33-year-old midfield maestro led the team out for the final time. From his trademark reverse passes to a thunderous strike that rattled the crossbar, De Bruyne reminded fans of the magic he has brought over the last decade.

His substitution in the second half was met with a standing ovation, a guard of honour from teammates, and an emotional embrace from manager Pep Guardiola. A post-match tribute featuring a video montage and the announcement of a De Bruyne statue capped off the legendary playmaker’s final home appearance.

“Manchester is home. I didn’t expect to be here for 10 years, but we built something incredible. This club will win with or without me,” De Bruyne said post-match.

Rodri Returns After Eight-Month Injury Layoff

While De Bruyne’s farewell dominated headlines, the return of Rodri from an anterior cruciate ligament injury was another major boost for City. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, sidelined since September, received a hero’s welcome when he came off the bench, signaling his readiness ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup and the 2025/26 campaign.

How the Match Unfolded

After a cagey opening, Marmoush ignited the Etihad with a 30-yard screamer in the 14th minute – a potential Goal of the Season contender. Bernardo Silva doubled the lead just before half-time after Ilkay Gündoğan’s clever assist.

The second half saw Mateo Kovačić sent off for a professional foul, but Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook was also shown red minutes later for a dangerous challenge on Nico. The January signing then marked his home debut with a sensational solo goal, capping off a dream night.

Daniel Jebbison netted a consolation goal in stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough to spoil the celebration.

Champions League Qualification within reach

The win sees Manchester City leapfrog Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Newcastle into third place. A final-day victory at Fulham will secure Champions League football for a record 15th consecutive season. Even a draw or narrow defeat could suffice, depending on other results.

“Kevin’s farewell was special. But the three points tonight were crucial. We want to play Champions League football next season, and we’re nearly there,” Guardiola said.

What’s Next for Manchester City?

City’s final Premier League clash of the season comes away at Fulham this weekend. All eyes will be on whether De Bruyne features for one last time, or if his Etihad exit marked the curtain call.

Following the domestic season, City prepare for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in June, with Rodri’s return adding much-needed stability as Guardiola’s men chase more silverware.
