Manchester City 3-1 Chelsea: Cityzens rally to defeat Blues as Haaland shines and Khusanov endures tough debut

Manchester City overcame an early setback to secure a 3-1 victory over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, bouncing back from a defensive error by debutant Abdukodir Khusanov. The win lifts Pep Guardiola's side to fourth place in the Premier League with 41 points, 12 behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Chelsea, meanwhile, slip to sixth, one point behind City.

Khusanov, the 20-year-old Uzbekistan international signed from Lens earlier this week, endured a difficult debut. His early misstep allowed the visitors to take the lead in the 10th minute. Misjudging a long ball, Khusanov under-hit a header back to goalkeeper Ederson, gifting Nicolas Jackson the chance to set up Noni Madueke for a simple finish.

Just a minute later, Khusanov was booked for a clumsy challenge on Cole Palmer. Struggling to find his rhythm in English football, the young defender was substituted early in the second half, with John Stones replacing him.

Despite the rocky start, manager Pep Guardiola showed support for the youngster. “The players were together. That was massively important. Any player can make a mistake. The fans always support the new players. He’s so young. He will learn,” Guardiola said.

While Khusanov struggled, fellow debutant Omar Marmoush made a positive impact. The Egyptian striker, also signed this week, caused problems for Chelsea’s defense with his movement and work rate, helping City regain control in the first half.

City’s equalizer came just before halftime when Josko Gvardiol pounced on a rebound in the box to slot home, turning the tide in the hosts' favor.

The second half saw Erling Haaland take center stage. In the 68th minute, Haaland capitalized on a long ball, lifting it over an out-of-position Robert Sanchez to give City a 2-1 lead.

Haaland then turned provider, holding up play brilliantly near the halfway line before releasing Phil Foden with a perfectly timed pass. Foden raced through the Chelsea defense and calmly finished past Sanchez to seal the win.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Haaland praised his team’s resilience. “When we had the start like we did it is difficult, but we played really well and we kept on going and kept on going,” Haaland said.

“We kept pushing and second half was the same. In the end, it is what we need to do. We need to lock it in the back and keep going attacking-wise,” he added.
