Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle clinch Champions League spots on Premier League final day

The 2024/25 Premier League season concluded in breathtaking fashion as Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle United secured top-five finishes and booked their places in the UEFA Champions League, leaving Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest to settle for Europa and Conference League football, respectively.

Despite widespread expectations of high-scoring drama, the final day saw just six goals across four decisive fixtures, as tension and narrow margins dictated the European qualification race.

Manchester City seal Champions League spot and turn attention to Club World Cup

At Craven Cottage, Manchester City displayed their trademark composure with a 2-0 win over Fulham, thanks to Ilkay Gundogan's early strike and an Erling Haaland penalty. Pep Guardiola’s side ended the domestic campaign in strong form, extending their unbeaten run to 10 league games and qualifying for next season's Champions League.

“It’s like a title,” Guardiola remarked, acknowledging the importance of a top-five finish in what marks his first trophyless season since 2016/17.

City now shift focus to the FIFA Club World Cup, where they’ll represent Europe on the global stage this summer.

Chelsea edge Forest to return to Champions League under Maresca

At the City Ground, Chelsea earned a narrow but vital 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, with Levi Colwill heading in the only goal shortly after half-time. It marked a turning point for the club under new head coach Enzo Maresca, securing their first Champions League appearance under BlueCo ownership and since 2022/23.

“This club deserves to be in the Champions League,” Colwill said post-match, reflecting the mood in the Chelsea camp after a turbulent yet ultimately successful season.

With Champions League revenue and a Club World Cup windfall on the horizon, Chelsea look poised for an ambitious summer rebuild.

Newcastle stumble, but goal difference sends them to Champions League

In one of the day’s biggest surprises, Newcastle United lost 2-1 at home to Everton, yet still secured a top-five finish thanks to their superior goal difference over Aston Villa (+21 to +9). Eddie Howe’s men were left stunned but relieved as results elsewhere fell in their favour.

Newcastle will now return to the Champions League for the second time in three seasons, a significant achievement under their current ownership.

Aston Villa fall just short, settle for Europa League

At Old Trafford, Aston Villa were undone 2-0 by Manchester United in a match laced with controversy. A legitimate Morgan Rogers goal was ruled out due to an early referee whistle, and Emiliano Martinez's red card further dented Villa’s hopes.

Despite needing only a draw to clinch Champions League qualification, Villa fell flat.

“I don't think anyone in the dressing room or anyone watching the game felt we deserved to win,” admitted captain John McGinn, as the club reflected on a bittersweet end to a solid campaign.

Villa will now compete in the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League, a competition manager Unai Emery has historically excelled in.

Forest miss out on Europa League but celebrate European Return

Nottingham Forest, despite their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, clinched a place in the UEFA Conference League, their first European appearance since the 1995/96 season. Forest had chances to turn the match in their favour, most notably Chris Wood’s missed opportunity in stoppage time.

Forest finished seventh in the Premier League and made history by doubling their points tally from the previous season — the largest year-on-year improvement in the competition's history.

“It’s been an extraordinary campaign,” said manager Nuno Espírito Santo, praising his players for their resilience.
