Manchester City sign Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG on five-year deal

The 26-year-old shot-stopper, widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in modern football, has signed a five-year contract that keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2030. The deal is subject to international clearance.

Standing at 6ft 5in, Donnarumma brings both size and presence between the posts. More importantly, he arrives with elite experience across Serie A, Ligue 1, the Champions League, and international football with Italy.

His reputation was forged at AC Milan, where he made his debut as a 16-year-old in 2015 and went on to feature in more than 250 matches, winning the 2016 Italian Supercoppa and establishing himself as the club’s undisputed No. 1.

In 2021, he joined Paris Saint-Germain, where he collected:

  • 4 Ligue 1 titles
  • 2 Coupe de France trophies
  • 3 Trophée des Champions
  • And most importantly, the club’s first UEFA Champions League crown in 2025, following a 5-0 victory over Inter Milan.

At PSG, his performances earned him the Yashin Trophy (2021) as the world’s best goalkeeper and cemented his reputation as one of the most reliable keepers in Europe.

On the international stage, Donnarumma is already an Italian legend. At EURO 2020, his penalty-saving heroics against Spain in the semi-finals and England in the final helped Italy lift the trophy at Wembley. His decisive saves earned him the UEFA Player of the Tournament, making him the first goalkeeper ever to win the award.

Since his debut at 17, Donnarumma has amassed 76 caps for Italy and is expected to remain their first-choice goalkeeper for years to come.

Donnarumma’s excitement at joining City

In his first words as a City player, Donnarumma described the move as a “special and proud moment.”

“To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me. I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by one of the greatest managers in football, Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player would love to join. I cannot wait to meet my teammates, the staff and the fans. Playing at the Etihad Stadium will be very special for me.”

City’s Director of Football: A World-Class Addition

Manchester City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana, welcomed the signing, highlighting Donnarumma’s rare blend of youth and elite experience.

“From a remarkably young age, Gianluigi has played at the very top level. That is unusual for a goalkeeper and it means he arrives here as one of the best in the world. His pedigree and record speak for themselves, and we are thrilled he has joined us. He will add even more depth and quality to our goalkeeping department.”
