Manchester City signs midfielder Matheus Nunes from Wolverhampton

Manchester City has finalized the signing of midfielder Matheus Nunes, sealing the deal with Wolverhampton for a reported transfer fee of £53 million ($67 million). The Brazil-born Portuguese international had been boycotting training with Wolves to secure a move to City, which previously had a lower bid rejected. Nunes has signed a five-year contract with City.
City's manager, Pep Guardiola, sought reinforcements in the midfield due to the injury to Kevin De Bruyne, who could be sidelined until the new year. Additionally, Ilkay Gundogan left the team to join Barcelona after his contract expired. In response, City signed central midfielder Mateo Kovacic as a replacement. However, Kovacic typically operates in deeper positions than Gundogan, who often played as an attacking midfielder just behind Erling Haaland.
Nunes, at 25 years old, generally plays in a more advanced midfield role compared to Kovacic. This difference in playing style could provide City with a fresh dimension in the Premier League and European competitions.
Nunes expressed his excitement about the opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola, whom he considers one of the greatest managers ever, and alongside some of the best players globally.
Wolverhampton had broken its transfer record just over a year ago by signing Nunes from Sporting Lisbon for an initial fee of €45 million ($49 million).
Nunes becomes City's fourth signing in this transfer window, following the arrivals of Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, and winger Jeremy Doku.
