Manchester City win Community Shield after beating rivals Manchester United on penalties

The first-ever Manchester Derby decided by a penalty shootout concluded with Manchester City emerging victorious, thereby breaking a streak of three consecutive defeats in the Community Shield.

The penalty shootout ended with a score of 7-6 against Manchester United, marking the seventh victory in the club's history and the third since Pep Guardiola assumed the managerial role at City.

This encounter marked only the eighth instance in Community Shield history where the previous season's FA Cup finalists clashed, with Erik ten Hag aiming to commence his third season at the helm of United with a win following their success in May.

A City lineup featuring a blend of youth and experience controlled the early stages of possession, while their opponents opted to absorb the pressure and counterattack.

The youthful players from City posed a significant threat to the United defense, particularly Oscar Bobb, who nearly scored the opener midway through the first half by cutting in from the right and sending a shot over the bar.

Shortly thereafter, Bobb capitalized on a defensive error from United, setting up James McAtee, whose curling attempt struck the post.

It was not until just before the half-hour mark that Ten Hag's squad began to threaten offensively, as Amad Diallo collected the ball on the right wing, advanced into the box, and fired a shot that missed the target.

The Red Devils concluded the first half with momentum, nearly taking the lead when a well-executed team play saw Marcus Rashford attempt a curling shot that went wide of the far post from within the penalty area.

Neither coach opted for substitutions during the halftime interval, and following the restart, United appeared significantly more at ease, finding the net within eight minutes.

Lisandro Martínez successfully penetrated the City defense, setting up Bruno Fernandes for a clear shot on goal. The United captain executed a remarkable finish from outside the penalty area; however, the joy was short-lived as a delayed offside flag nullified the goal.

A series of substitutions shifted the dynamics of the match shortly after the hour mark, leading to a more dynamic exchange of play. Rashford came close to scoring, only to be thwarted by the crossbar after receiving a precise pass from the energetic Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine winger continued to trouble City’s defense and finally broke the stalemate in the 82nd minute, skillfully maneuvering into the box and sliding the ball past Ederson. Nevertheless, Bernardo Silva equalized in the 89th minute with a powerful header, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

After both teams converted seven penalties, Jonny Evans missed his attempt by sending the ball over the bar, allowing Manuel Akanji to score the decisive penalty and secure victory for City against their local rivals, marking their first triumph in the Community Shield in six years.
