Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle United: Magpies heap further misery on struggling Red Devils with comfortable victory

Manchester United experienced their fifth league defeat within the same month for the first time since September 1962, falling 2-0 to Newcastle United at Old Trafford, which leaves them languishing in 14th place in the Premier League standings.

Ruben Amorim’s initial period as manager of Manchester United has come to an abrupt end, marked by a disappointing record of five losses in his first ten matches at the helm.

The Red Devils quickly found themselves on the path to a sixth defeat when Alexander Isak scored with a header from Lewis Hall’s cross just four minutes into the match. This goal made Isak the second Newcastle player to net in six consecutive Premier League games, equaling the achievement of Papiss Cissé in 2012.

Eddie Howe’s squad was determined to capitalize on their early lead, creating additional opportunities for Joelinton and Anthony Gordon, before Joelinton extended the visitors' advantage.

Gordon played a crucial role again, assisting the Brazilian, who powered his header past André Onana, further highlighting the struggles of Amorim’s team.

Isak nearly added a third goal when a deflected effort from Fabian Schar fell into his path, but the hosts were relieved as the assistant referee's flag was raised.

Shortly thereafter, Sandro Tonali's close-range attempt struck the post, contributing to a dismal first half for the Red Devils.

Nevertheless, Rasmus Hojlund provided a rare glimmer of hope for United with an angled shot that narrowly missed the far post, while Casemiro also sent an effort wide just before the half-time whistle.

After the break, Amorim’s team returned with increased vigor, and Harry Maguire was unfortunate not to reduce the deficit when his header from Diogo Dalot’s cross hit the post.

Leny Yoro then came close with a header that went wide from a Christian Eriksen corner, but the pressure was not sustained, allowing Newcastle to comfortably manage the closing stages of the match.

The harm was inflicted during the first half, as the Magpies secured their fourth consecutive victory in the top division without conceding, a feat they have not achieved since April 2012.

As a result of this match, Howe’s team ascended to fifth place, now only three points behind the top four, marking just their second Premier League victory at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, United experienced their third consecutive home league defeat, a situation they have not faced since a challenging period from December 1978 to February 1979, which is hardly an encouraging preparation for their upcoming match against their long-standing rivals, Liverpool.
