Manchester United 2-3 Nottingham Forest: Wood nets birthday goal as Forest stun dismal Red Devils to climb into top five

Nottingham Forest ascended into the top five of the Premier League standings following their first away victory against Manchester United since December 1994, securing a 3-2 win that handed Ruben Amorim’s team consecutive defeats.
After conceding two goals from corners in their previous match against Arsenal, it was evident that United had not addressed their defensive shortcomings, as they fell behind to Forest within two minutes for the second straight home encounter.
Elliot Anderson's cross was powerfully headed in by the relatively unmarked Nikola Milenković, marking his inaugural goal for the Tricky Trees and contributing to the total of seven goals United have conceded from corners this season, which is the highest in the league.
This goal also represented the twelfth occasion this season that Forest has taken the lead, the best record in the division. Nevertheless, the hosts were undeterred, controlling the game and equalizing in the 18th minute.
A well-executed move transitioned from defense to attack as Manuel Ugarte set up Alejandro Garnacho, whose shot was parried by Matz Sels into the path of Rasmus Højlund, who netted his third goal in as many matches.
Building on their equalizer proved challenging for the Red Devils, who struggled with their set-piece defense. Jota Silva struck the crossbar with a header from a deep free-kick, while Murillo missed a chance from a corner as the visitors regrouped.
However, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side soon found themselves relying on the woodwork as Bruno Fernandes’ powerful free-kick hit the crossbar, leaving the score level at halftime. With the match finely balanced, Forest seized the initiative, scoring twice within nine minutes of the second half due to a defensive lapse from the hosts.
Initially, Morgan Gibbs-White’s low, curling shot appeared to completely deceive André Onana, who mishandled the attempt, allowing the ball to settle in the center of the goal.
The visitors' third goal was particularly unusual, as a miscommunication among Onana, Lisandro Martínez, and Matthijs de Ligt allowed Chris Wood's looping header to find the far corner, making him Nottingham Forest's all-time leading scorer in the Premier League.
At Old Trafford, Amorim's frustration was palpable; however, Fernandes took the initiative and struck a powerful shot into the far corner, narrowing United's deficit with thirty minutes remaining.
A series of substitutions and stoppages interrupted the flow of the match, enabling Forest to diminish the impact of United's sporadic attacks, which were notably rare.
A powerful late volley from Amad Diallo was thwarted by Morato, as the visitors achieved only their second victory in the last fifteen encounters, marking the first season in which they have claimed league wins at both Anfield and Old Trafford.
Consequently, United's seven-match unbeaten streak at home has come to an end, leaving Amorim's team positioned in the lower half of the table with significant challenges ahead.
