Manchester United 3–1 Aston Villa: Cunha and Sesko seal crucial win

Manchester United strengthened their push for a top-four finish in the Premier League after a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Goals from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko ensured United collected three vital points in the race for Champions League qualification.
This win leaves United third in the table, three points ahead of Villa with eight matches remaining.

Casemiro breaks the deadlock
After a quiet first half, United finally found the breakthrough shortly after the interval. A powerful strike from Bryan Mbeumo forced a strong save from Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, leading to a corner.
United captain Bruno Fernandes delivered a precise cross to the near post, where Casemiro timed his run perfectly to head the ball past Martínez in the 53rd minute. With speculation that the Brazilian could leave the club when his contract expires, United supporters responded with chants urging him to stay another season.
Barkley brings Villa back into the match
Villa responded in the 64th minute through Ross Barkley. Making his first Premier League start in more than a year, Barkley capitalised on a defensive lapse to fire a powerful strike past goalkeeper Senne Lammens from close range. The equaliser briefly shifted momentum toward the visitors.

Cunha and Šeško seal the points
However, United quickly regained control. In the 71st minute, Cunha raced onto a superb through ball from Fernandes before calmly finishing into the far corner. The assist marked Fernandes’ 16th Premier League assist of the season, surpassing the club record set by David Beckham during the 1999-2000 campaign.
The Portuguese playmaker has now recorded 100 assists for Manchester United in all competitions since arriving from Sporting CP in 2020. Substitute Šeško then wrapped up the victory in the 81st minute, firing home a deflected effort to confirm United’s dominance in the closing stages.
Carrick strengthens case for permanent job
The result marked Michael Carrick’s seventh win in nine matches since he took over as interim manager following the departure of Ruben Amorim. United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe recently praised Carrick’s impact but stopped short of confirming him as the club’s long-term manager.
Still, the team’s improved form has strengthened Carrick’s case for the role on a permanent basis.
Villa’s European push falters
For Aston Villa, the defeat continues a worrying run of form. The club has now lost three consecutive league matches and managed just one win in their last seven Premier League outings.
Villa remain fourth but sit just three points ahead of the chasing pack as the race for European places intensifies.
