Manchester United stun Arsenal with late winner to ignite Premier League Title Race

Manchester United reignited the Premier League title race with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, dealing a significant blow to the Gunners’ championship ambitions on Sunday.

A late, thunderous strike from Matheus Cunha sealed the points for United, capping a breathless contest that swung repeatedly and ended Arsenal’s long unbeaten home run.

Arsenal strike first as United gift the opener

Arsenal began with their usual authority, pinning United deep and forcing early pressure that eventually paid off in the 29th minute. The opening goal came in chaotic fashion. Patrick Dorgu failed to clear Piero Hincapié’s cross, allowing Bukayo Saka to whip the ball back into the danger area. Martin Ødegaard miscued his effort, but under pressure from Jurrien Timber, Lisandro Martínez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing Arsenal the lead.

It was a rare defensive lapse for United and one that appeared to confirm Arsenal’s early dominance. Prior to kickoff, the Gunners had not conceded a shot on target in their previous two league matches.

United respond through Mbeumo after Arsenal error

Just as Arsenal looked settled, they were punished for a costly mistake of their own. In the 37th minute, a woefully under-hit back pass from Martín Zubimendi was pounced upon by Bryan Mbeumo, who calmly rounded David Raya before slotting home the equaliser.

The goal, Mbeumo’s ninth in all competitions since his move from Brentford, further underlined his steady rise in a United shirt and shifted the momentum decisively.

Dorgu’s stunner puts United ahead

United carried their confidence into the second half and struck just five minutes after the restart. Bruno Fernandes picked out Dorgu in space, and the 21-year-old took one touch before unleashing a fierce strike from 20 yards that flew into the top corner. Arsenal appealed for handball, but VAR upheld the goal, plunging the Emirates into anxious silence.

The strike marked Dorgu’s second goal in consecutive matches, vindicating Michael Carrick’s decision to deploy him in a more advanced role.

Late drama as Merino levels before Cunha’s decisive blow

To their credit, Arsenal refused to fold. Their persistence finally paid off in the 84th minute, once again from a set piece. David Raya’s counterpart Lammens failed to deal with Saka’s corner, and Mikel Merino reacted quickest to bundle the ball home from close range, seemingly rescuing a point for the league leaders.

But the drama was far from over.

Just three minutes later, United delivered the decisive moment. Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo combined to tee up Matheus Cunha, who unleashed a sublime 25-yard drive that flew past Raya and into the corner, stunning the home crowd.

Title race wide open after Arsenal stumble

The defeat was Arsenal’s first in 13 matches across all competitions and their first home loss in 18 games, stretching back to May. More importantly, it tightens the title race considerably. Arsenal now sit just four points clear of second-placed Manchester City and third-placed Aston Villa, both of whom closed the gap with wins over Wolves and Newcastle respectively.

Despite Pep Guardiola recently labelling Arsenal “the best team in the world,” the Gunners’ three-game winless run in the league has raised fresh questions about their composure in the closing stages of a title challenge.

Manager Mikel Arteta, still without a major trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, faces renewed scrutiny as Arsenal attempt to avoid repeating past collapses after holding commanding leads in previous seasons.

Carrick’s dream start continues

For United, the result continued an extraordinary start under interim manager Michael Carrick. The former Middlesbrough boss, appointed following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, has now masterminded wins over Manchester City and Arsenal in successive weeks, lifting United into fourth place and restoring belief after a turbulent period. It was also United’s first win at the Emirates Stadium since December 2017, further underlining the scale of the achievement.
