Manchester United crash out of FA Cup after penalty shootout loss to Fulham

Manchester United's disappointing season reached a new nadir as the FA Cup holders were eliminated following a 4-3 defeat in a penalty shoot-out against Fulham in the fifth round on Sunday.

Ruben Amorim's team fell behind to Calvin Bassey's first-half goal at Old Trafford, but Bruno Fernandes managed to equalize, resulting in a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Fulham's goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, emerged as the standout performer in the shoot-out, saving attempts from Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee, while the visitors successfully converted all four of their penalties.

Booed off the pitch at halftime, Manchester United faced yet another disappointing outcome in a season that sees them positioned 14th in the Premier League.

The 13-time FA Cup champions had reached the final in the previous two seasons, triumphing over Manchester City to claim the trophy last year.

However, there will be no journey to Wembley for United this season, as their only remaining opportunity for silverware lies in the Europa League.

This week has been particularly challenging at Old Trafford, with the announcement of 200 job cuts, alongside struggles to secure a draw against Everton and a narrow victory over lowly Ipswich.

Amorim acknowledged that the current situation is "difficult" for United, marking yet another setback for the beleaguered Portuguese coach, who took over in November after the dismissal of Erik ten Hag.

United will face Real Sociedad in the first leg of the Europa League last 16 on Thursday, followed by a Premier League match against Arsenal.

It quickly became apparent to Amorim that United was in for another disheartening afternoon.

Rasmus Hojlund missed a chance from a tight angle after receiving a cross from Christian Eriksen, extending his goalless streak to 18 matches.

Eriksen's curling shot was parried away by Leno, yet this did little to appease fans who have grown frustrated with years of underperformance.

During the first half, chants of discontent aimed at United's owners, the Glazer family, and Jim Ratcliffe were heard, while banners protesting ticket price increases were displayed in the stands.

Fulham posed their first threat when Sasa Lukic headed over from a cross by Alex Iwobi.

A warning that went unheeded by United resulted in Fulham taking the lead with their initial shot on target just moments before half-time.

United's vulnerability at set-pieces was laid bare when Andreas Pereira's corner was flicked on by Rodrigo Muniz, allowing Bassey to react more swiftly than Noussair Mazraoui and head the ball into the net from six yards out.

Amorim opted to keep Alejandro Garnacho on the bench for the first 53 minutes following the Argentine's unsportsmanlike reaction to being substituted in the match against Ipswich.

The 20-year-old had stormed directly down the tunnel, an incident that Amorim stated had been resolved after the winger agreed to treat his teammates to dinner.

With United trailing, Amorim was compelled to bring Garnacho into the game, his arrival eliciting a cheer from the crowd, yet it did not lead to significant improvement for the team.

United goalkeeper Andre Onana was required to dive to his right to prevent Emile Smith Rowe from extending Fulham's lead.

Once again this season, United captain Fernandes managed to mask the team's deficiencies temporarily.

Fernandes equalized in the 71st minute, connecting with Diogo Dalot's cross and delivering a remarkable low shot into the far corner from 12 yards.

However, despite having previously come from behind to defeat Ipswich and secure a draw against Everton, there would be no miraculous comeback this time.

Onana thwarted Smith Rowe in stoppage time, leading to a disjointed extra-time period with few opportunities until Chido Obi nearly managed to slip his shot past Leno.

Ryan Sessegnon came close with a powerful attempt that Onana deflected, but ultimately, United's fate was sealed in a tense penalty shoot-out.
