Manchester United sack coach Erik ten Hag

Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a poor start to the season, the club announced Monday. The Red Devils, sitting at a dismal 14th in the Premier League, have struggled for form, suffering four losses in their first nine league games and securing only one win in their last eight matches across all competitions.

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” a club statement confirmed. “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.” Ten Hag’s tenure, which began in April 2022, saw some success, including winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

Former United star Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined as Ten Hag’s assistant in July, will serve as interim manager until a permanent head coach is appointed.

A Rocky Tenure and Missed Expectations

Despite an encouraging first season that included an FA Cup final appearance and a third-place league finish, Ten Hag’s second season quickly unraveled. Injuries, a lack of impact from big-money signings, and inconsistency plagued United’s performances, culminating in embarrassing defeats to Bournemouth, Brighton, and Fulham at Old Trafford. United also crashed out of the Champions League group stage after losses to Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen, adding pressure on the Dutch manager.

A standout FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last May had earned Ten Hag a contract extension, but results in the new season fell short. Heavy defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham and poor Europa League results further highlighted United’s struggles.

Structural Changes and Future Prospects

Ten Hag’s departure marks another chapter in United’s post-Alex Ferguson era struggles. The club has now dismissed five managers since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, with none able to replicate the title-winning success of the iconic Scotsman. Under new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, the club has implemented a new sporting structure with changes at the executive level, aimed at reviving United’s former glory.

United now embark on a search for a new head coach who can not only bring stability but also ignite the kind of sustained success that Old Trafford fans have craved for over a decade.
