Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim after explosive press conference fallout

Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim just 14 months after his appointment, bringing an abrupt end to a turbulent reign that culminated in a public showdown with the club’s hierarchy.

Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024, leaves Old Trafford despite guiding the club to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May, where United fell short of silverware. His dismissal comes less than 24 hours after a fiery press conference following a 1–1 Premier League draw away at Leeds United.

Press Conference that sealed his fate

The final straw appeared to be Amorim’s blunt comments questioning the level of authority and backing he was receiving from United’s board. Speaking after the Elland Road stalemate, the 40-year-old made it clear he felt his role had been undermined.

I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the head coach,” Amorim said. “I know my name is not Antonio Conte, Thomas Tuchel, or Jose Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United.”

He went further, suggesting his position was time-limited and dependent on the board’s willingness to fully empower him.

“It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change. I’m not going to quit. I’ll do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.

Amorim also referenced internal criticism and the club’s wider culture, stating that United needed deeper structural change if it hoped to return to the elite.

“If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticism of everything, then we need to change the club,” he added.
“I came here to be the manager, not just the coach. Every department needs to do their job.”

Results and Internal Tensions

United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, and while still in contention for European qualification, the club’s leadership has concluded that a change now offers the best chance of salvaging the season.

According to reports, Amorim’s relationship with director of football Jason Wilcox had deteriorated significantly. Tensions reportedly escalated after the hierarchy urged the Portuguese coach to adopt greater tactical flexibility, advice Amorim did not take kindly to.

Concerns were also raised internally over squad management decisions, including the continued absence of Kobbie Mainoo, who has been frozen out for much of the campaign.

Short-Term Future Decided

Manchester United confirmed that Darren Fletcher will take charge on an interim basis, starting with Wednesday’s league fixture against Burnley.

In a brief statement, the club thanked Amorim for his service and wished him well in his future career. While his tenure will be remembered for flashes of progress and a European final appearance, it ultimately ended the same way many managerial reigns at Old Trafford have in recent years, with tension, uncertainty, and another reset looming.
