Maresca admits Mudryk must make better decisions in final third

Mykhailo Mudryk (23) has faced challenges in making effective decisions in the final third since his arrival at Chelsea last year; however, manager Enzo Maresca (44) has indicated that the club is actively working with the winger to enhance his consistency.

In their recent match, Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory against Swiss team Servette at home during the first leg of their Conference League playoff on Thursday, as the players continue to adapt to Maresca's new system.

Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring with a penalty in the 50th minute, followed by a goal from substitute Noni Madueke, who extended the lead to 2-0 with under 15 minutes remaining.

Since joining Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in January of last year, Mudryk has struggled to live up to his substantial transfer fee, and Thursday's match marked one of the rare occasions he completed the full 90 minutes.

The club initially invested 70 million euros ($77 million) for the winger, with an additional 30 million euros contingent on performance-related add-ons.

Maresca commented on Mudryk's performance, stating, "This is Mudryk, not only in terms of tonight but since he joined the club. He has had some positive moments, yet there have also been instances that seem unpredictable."

He further explained, "If he can achieve greater consistency, it will represent significant progress. We are committed to assisting him in this transformation. In the final third, the focus is on making the correct decisions. Most of Mudryk's errors stem not from a lack of quality or technical ability, but rather from poor decision-making."

As transfer rumors circulate regarding the Stamford Bridge club, Maresca is keen to streamline his squad, yet he expressed a desire to retain winger Madueke.

"I have a strong appreciation for Noni," he stated. "The primary challenge for him is to recognize the importance of maintaining consistency throughout the week—every training session, without exception."

When asked about his intentions for the 22-year-old's future at the club, Maresca affirmed, "Absolutely."

Chelsea is set to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Sunday.
