Maresca calls on Chelsea players to respond after Boxing Day defeat to Fulham

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca stated that it is unrealistic to expect the team to suffer only one defeat in the Premier League every two months, as he urged his players to respond positively to the unexpected 2-1 loss at home to Fulham.

Prior to this setback, Chelsea had narrowed the gap to leaders Liverpool to just two points after achieving five consecutive victories. However, a disappointing 0-0 draw against Everton was followed by Fulham's first victory at Stamford Bridge since 1979.

Currently, Chelsea finds themselves seven points behind Liverpool, who also have a game in hand.

This season, Maresca's squad had previously only lost two league matches, one to Manchester City on the opening day and another to Liverpool in October.

The Italian coach has consistently maintained that his young team is not yet prepared to contend for the title, but he is looking for a strong response in their upcoming match against Ipswich on Monday.

"We never anticipated winning every match," Maresca remarked. "We experienced a loss on August 18, and then again after two months. However, we understand that the reality is not merely to lose one game every two months. The focus now is on how we respond and strive to move forward."

Maresca has effectively utilized Chelsea's extensive squad in the Europa Conference League, leading the team to the knockout stages without dropping a single point across six matches.

Players who have excelled in European competition may be granted a rare chance to participate in Premier League action at Portman Road during this busy festive season for English clubs.

Earlier this month, Maresca made seven changes to the lineup for a 5-1 victory at Southampton during a similarly packed schedule.

It is certain that adjustments will be made, he remarked.

"Following a match, it is essential to regroup, regardless of the outcome. This is particularly crucial during this month.

"In December alone, we have already participated in eight or nine matches within a span of 26 or 27 days. It is now vital to recuperate our energy and prepare for the next game on Monday."

England international Noni Madueke is among those likely to return after being unexpectedly omitted from the squad for the match against Fulham.

Earlier in the season, Maresca advised Madueke to elevate his performance in training and anticipates a similar response to the one he exhibited after scoring against Southampton shortly after being dropped for a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.

"Is he available for the match against Ipswich? Absolutely," Maresca confirmed.

"He responded exceptionally well at that time, and I expect nothing less this time around."
