Maresca expects no problems with Fernandez after race row

Fernandez was involved in a controversy regarding racism due to a video he posted on social media, where he and his Argentina teammates sang a derogatory chant about the France national team following their Copa America victory in July.

The song contained racist and homophobic insults, targeting players like Kylian Mbappe. Fernandez apologized for the video, but both FIFA and the club are looking into the matter.

France and Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana criticized the video on social media, labeling it as "uninhibited racism." Fernandez is currently on vacation after international duty and is set to rejoin his Chelsea colleagues later this month.

Maresca, speaking during Chelsea's pre-season tour in the United States, stated that it is straightforward for the player to issue an apology statement, as both the player and the club have already done so, making the situation clear and resolved.

The Chelsea squad consists of seven French players, but Maresca believes that Fernandez's return will not lead to any problems.

"I believe that they are all human beings, and I don't think any of them have bad intentions. I don't foresee any issues when Enzo returns," stated the Italian.

"The player has already clarified the situation, and the club has done the same. Therefore, there is nothing more to add.

"Once again, I don't think they are bad people or human beings. It can happen, but I don't think there are any problems at all."

Following the incident, several of the Argentinian's teammates have unfollowed him on social media.

Club captain Reece James mentioned at Wednesday's press conference that he hoped there would not be any disruption, but he would be prepared to step in if there were "anything to amend."

"It was obviously a very difficult situation. I think Enzo acknowledged that he was wrong and quickly apologized to the club, the team, and those who were offended," said James.

"He hasn't returned yet, so I don't know if there's anything to amend. I'll have to make that judgment when he comes back. I hope everyone will be on the same page, and we can move forward from the situation."
