Maresca slams Delap after costly red card in Chelsea’s League Cup win

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca did not hold back after his side’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Wolves in the League Cup fourth round, labelling Liam Delap’s red card “stupid” and “embarrassing.”
Delap, who was making his first appearance since August following a hamstring injury, was shown two yellow cards in just seven minutes after coming on as a late substitute. His dismissal marked Chelsea’s sixth red card in nine matches, a worrying disciplinary trend that clearly frustrated the Italian coach.
“For today we have a very stupid red card, completely unnecessary,” Maresca said after the match. “It’s embarrassing — two yellow cards in seven minutes. Both could have been avoided. After the first one, I told him four or five times to keep calm, but he struggled to listen.”
The first booking came when Liam Delap brought down Yerson Mosquera, and the second followed a reckless aerial challenge on Emmanuel Agbadou. As a result, the young striker will miss Chelsea’s upcoming London derby against Tottenham on Saturday — a major setback after his long-awaited return from injury.
Chelsea advance to Quarter-Finals despite late scare
Despite the red card drama, Chelsea’s attacking display was one of their most encouraging of the season. The Blues stormed to a 3-0 halftime lead, with Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, and Estevão Willian all finding the net against a struggling Wolves side.

Wolves fought back in the second half through Tolu Arokodare and David Wolfe, who both scored to make it 3-2, setting up a nervy finish. Jamie Gittens appeared to seal victory for Chelsea with a 90th-minute strike, but Wolfe’s second goal moments later kept tensions high until the final whistle.
Maresca’s team ultimately held on to book their spot in the quarter-finals, where they will face third-tier Cardiff City, who defeated Wrexham earlier in the week.
“We Have to Learn” – Maresca on Chelsea’s Discipline Issues
While pleased with the result, Maresca made it clear that his patience with unnecessary red cards is wearing thin.
“I completely support the red cards that come from tough moments or difficult matches, like against Brighton or Manchester United,” he said. “But today’s one, and the one against Nottingham, were avoidable. We have to learn because it’s hurting us.”
Chelsea’s recent run has been defined by inconsistency and ill-discipline, with suspensions adding to an already stretched squad. The win over Wolves, however, keeps their hopes of a domestic trophy alive as they push for stability under Maresca’s leadership.

What’s Next for Chelsea
The Blues face a quick turnaround as they prepare for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham — a match Delap will now miss due to suspension. Maresca will hope the team can carry their attacking rhythm into the league and avoid any further disciplinary setbacks.
With a League Cup quarter-final tie against Cardiff on the horizon, Chelsea’s young squad has a real chance to turn potential into silverware — but only if they can keep their composure.
