Marseille Dominates Struggling Montpellier in Impressive Ligue 1 Win

Marseille ascended to third place in Ligue 1 following a commanding 5-0 victory over Montpellier at the Stade de la Mosson. Montpellier, currently at the bottom of the league, has endured a dismal start to the season, suffering five defeats in their first seven matches and conceding a staggering 21 goals.

Although Marseille fans were prohibited from attending the match due to a last-minute decision by the authorities, the team was heavily favored to secure all three points and demonstrated their dominance just 50 seconds into the game.

Mason Greenwood delivered a cross to the back post, which Jonathan Rowe headed back across the goal, allowing former Montpellier player Elye Wahi to tap the ball into an unguarded net.

Teji Savanier attempted a free-kick that sailed over the bar, but Montpellier struggled in the early moments and relied on Benjamin Lecomte to make a crucial save against Rowe’s header, followed by an even more impressive stop to deny Wahi as he approached the goal.

As the match progressed, Montpellier began to find their rhythm. After Akor Adams narrowly missed with a header, they nearly equalized in a rather comical fashion. Arnaud Nordin's long-range shot deflected off Leonardo Balerdi, nearly surprising Geronimo Rulli, who could only deflect it onto the crossbar.

Adams had a golden opportunity to score from the rebound, but despite being in a favorable position, he could only manage to hit the side netting.

Montpellier's failure to capitalize on that chance proved costly, as Amine Harit struck Ulisses Garcia’s cross into the top of the net just before half-time.

There was still time for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to add a third goal before the break, which came after Joris Chotard had to leave the field due to injury.

As the teams retreated to their dressing rooms, Michel Der Zakarian must have been contemplating how to inspire his team after such a disheartening first half. The home manager might have hoped for an improvement in the second half, but he was mistaken.

Prior to the one-hour mark, Greenwood extended the lead to four by firing a shot past Lecomte. Shortly thereafter, substitute Stefan Dzodic received a straight red card for fouling Harit as the last defender.

Marseille sought to capitalize on the numerical advantage and enhance their goal difference, quickly adding a fifth goal through Luiz Henrique’s simple finish at the back post.

Greenwood found the net for a sixth time almost immediately, but in a rare act of leniency towards Montpellier, the goal was disallowed for offside.

As the match progressed, Marseille eased off their offensive efforts, allowing their opponents to limit the damage to just five goals conceded. This performance could not have been more fortuitous in preparation for their upcoming clash against league leaders Paris Saint-Germain, instilling confidence for a favorable outcome.

Conversely, Montpellier finds themselves in dire straits at the bottom of the table and must urgently rectify their situation to avoid being left behind.
