Martin and Bagnaia head to Sepang with MotoGP world title within sight

Jorge Martin and Italy's Francesco Bagnaia are set to compete this weekend at Sepang, Malaysia, with the MotoGP world championship title tantalizingly close for the Spaniard.
Martin enters the penultimate race of the season with a 17-point advantage, as the Pramac Ducati rider seeks to secure his first championship title.
Bagnaia, the two-time reigning champion riding for Ducati, faces a critical challenge, fully aware that his competitor can mathematically claim the title in Malaysia.
However, it is more probable that the championship contest will extend to the final round in Valencia next month, with a total of 74 points still available.
During the rainy Thai Grand Prix in Buriram on Sunday, Bagnaia started from pole position and crossed the finish line ahead of Martin, marking his ninth victory of the season.
In the challenging wet conditions, Martin was satisfied with a second-place finish, recognizing that consistent performances in Sepang and Valencia would suffice to secure the championship.
The humid environment of Sepang is expected to mirror the conditions in Thailand, with rain anticipated for both the Saturday sprint race and the main event on Sunday.
Martin experienced several challenging moments in the wet at Buriram as he fought to maintain control of his Ducati, yet he emerged from the difficult weekend unscathed in the championship race.
"Believe me, it's incredibly challenging to be either Pecco or myself at this stage of the championship," remarked the 26-year-old Martin, alluding to Bagnaia.
"He is always a formidable opponent and a remarkable champion.
"It is a privilege for me to be in this position, competing against him at this point in the championship."
The results in Thailand have now set the stage for a direct contest between Bagnaia and Martin, with the latter able to secure the title if he outperforms Bagnaia by 21 points at Sepang.
Bagnaia expressed that his recent victory has provided him with a boost of confidence as he heads into Sepang.
"Malaysia is another favorable track for us," stated the 27-year-old.
"It is a venue where I have consistently performed very well."
In the previous year in Malaysia, Enea Bastianini, a teammate of Bagnaia, secured victory in the grand prix, finishing ahead of Alex Marquez, while Bagnaia claimed third place and Martin finished fourth.
Bagnaia subsequently defended his world title during the season finale in Valencia, with Martin concluding the season in second place.
This time, the dynamics have shifted, as Bagnaia finds himself pursuing Martin in the championship standings. Nevertheless, the Italian expressed a resolute attitude during the event in Thailand.
"Honestly, I never give up," Bagnaia remarked following his ninth victory of the season.
"I always have faith in my abilities and in my team. I will continue to fight as long as there is a possibility.
"I have always been this way, and I will maintain this approach every season, striving to give my utmost."
