Martinez nets the decisive goal as Inter secures victory against rival Roma in their Serie A showdown

Inter Milan, the reigning Serie A champions, reclaimed second place in the league standings following a 1-0 victory against mid-table AS Roma, who failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities at the Stadio Olimpico for the 25th consecutive league match.

The match began with Inter asserting control over possession and registering the first shot on target when Lautaro Martinez set up Marcus Thuram, whose effort was parried by goalkeeper Mile Svilar.

At the opposite end, Yann Sommer experienced a moment of concern when he fumbled a shot from Lorenzo Pellegrini, which narrowly avoided entering the net after hitting the left post.

Subsequently, coach Simone Inzaghi was compelled to make a substitution, bringing on Davide Frattesi for Hakan Calhanoglu, who had to leave the field due to a muscle injury.

Despite this change, the tempo of the match remained high, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan striking the crossbar with a powerful volley. The injury woes continued for the visitors as Stefan de Vrij replaced Francesco Acerbi, who appeared to be struggling with a hamstring issue, in the 27th minute.

As the first half came to a close, Sommer was forced to deflect Pellegrini’s powerful shot, leaving both Inzaghi and his counterpart Ivan Jurić feeling that the match was still within reach for either team.

However, AS Roma found it challenging to generate significant scoring chances, and when they did, their execution often fell short. In contrast, Inter looked more dangerous and eventually took the lead in the 60th minute.

Nicola Zalewski was caught off guard, and although Frattesi initially mismanaged the counter-attack with an inaccurate pass after dispossessing Zalewski, Zeki Celik's heavy touch allowed Lautaro to seize the opportunity, striking the ball decisively into the net from just inside the penalty area.

Celik partially atoned for his earlier mistake shortly thereafter by sliding in to thwart Federico Dimarco from extending the lead to 2-0. However, after striker Artem Dovbyk failed to convert a header that he should have likely directed on target, Roma appeared unlikely to challenge Sommer and could have faced a greater deficit, as Svilar excelled in denying both Denzel Dumfries and Thuram.

Roma has now secured only one victory in their last 16 encounters (D6, L9) and must regroup in preparation for their UEFA Europa League match against Dynamo Kyiv on Thursday. Conversely, Inter will compete in Europe a day earlier, as they are set to face Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League.
