Mauricio Pochettino eyes return to Wembley after League Cup loss

Mauricio Pochettino has emphasized the importance for Chelsea to secure a place in the FA Cup final at Wembley, as he disclosed that a few of his anxious players struggled to find restful sleep prior to their loss against Liverpool in the League Cup final.

Pochettino's team, which has been inconsistent, will be hosting the Championship leaders Leicester in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.

With the semi-finals taking place at Wembley, a victory would provide Chelsea with an opportunity to make up for their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in the League Cup final in February.

Chelsea's squad is predominantly young, and Pochettino acknowledged that some of them struggled to sleep due to their lack of experience in big matches before the final at the national stadium.

"Confidentially, some players had trouble sleeping before the final," the Chelsea manager informed the press on Friday.

"This is something that comes with experience, and by going through these situations, you can improve. We learn from experience. Pain teaches you more. Returning to Wembley would be a different experience.

Another semi-final would be fantastic for us. Having the opportunity to reach the final and secure a spot in Europe through the FA Cup would be significant."

Pochettino's first season in charge of Chelsea has been challenging, as the team currently sits in 11th place in the Premier League.

Despite significant investment in new players since co-owner Todd Boehly took over in 2022, Chelsea has not won a domestic trophy in six years.

Winning a trophy would alleviate the pressure on Pochettino, who has faced criticism from Chelsea fans. When asked about success at Stamford Bridge,

Pochettino mentioned the unpredictable nature of expectations in England, comparing it to the changing weather.

He emphasized the importance of supporting the club's efforts and contributing their knowledge to make a difference.

Pochettino's aspirations for a successful conclusion to the season may hinge on Cole Palmer, who has become a key player in Chelsea's attack since transferring from Manchester City in September.

Palmer contributed a goal and an assist in Monday's 3-2 victory over Newcastle, bringing his total to 13 goals in all competitions for the club this season.

The 21-year-old has earned a spot in England's squad for their Euro 2024 warm-up matches against Brazil and Belgium after an impressive breakthrough season.

Pochettino commented, "It's not surprising to see him display such strong personality and character. His ability to handle the pressure of playing for a top club like Chelsea sets him apart."

"Sometimes exceptional players require time to adjust to this level of competition. However, he seems like he's been here for 20 years. The talent is undeniable."
