Max Verstappen fends off McLaren duo to win fourth consecutive Japanese Grand Prix

Max Verstappen silenced his critics and reignited his title defense with a masterful performance at Suzuka, winning the Japanese Grand Prix for the fourth consecutive year. The reigning world champion beat out McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in a tense, tactical showdown that may have lacked overtaking drama but delivered a clear message: Verstappen is far from done.

Verstappen Back On Top With First Win Of 2025 Season

After a rocky start to the season, Verstappen executed a near-flawless drive to claim his first victory of the year. Despite Red Bull’s early balance struggles and a surging McLaren threat, the Dutchman delivered a pole-to-flag win that puts him within one point of championship leader Lando Norris.

“The weekend started off quite tough, but we didn’t give up,” Verstappen said post-race. “Starting on pole made it possible to win. We still have work to do, but this shows we’re still right there.”

Pole Position Was Key

The foundation was laid on Saturday, when Verstappen edged Norris by just 0.01 seconds to take pole with a scintillating lap. On a Suzuka circuit where overtaking remains a challenge, track position proved decisive. From the moment he held the lead through Turn 1, Verstappen never looked back.

McLaren Gamble Fails To Pay Off

McLaren looked like Red Bull’s equal on race pace, but it was strategy—not speed—that shaped the final result. In a pivotal moment, Norris and Verstappen pitted simultaneously, emerging side-by-side from the pit lane. Verstappen narrowly held the position, forcing Norris onto the grass. The incident was reviewed by the FIA, who ruled it hard but fair racing—a call both drivers reluctantly accepted.

“I didn’t expect Max to push that hard, but it was within the limits,” Norris later admitted.

McLaren’s choice to pit Piastri first, rather than attempt an undercut with Norris, left all three contenders on identical hard tyres with no offset—a missed opportunity in a race with limited passing chances.

Line Astern To The Finish

The final 20 laps became a tense, high-speed chess match. Norris and Piastri remained within two seconds of Verstappen, ready to pounce, but the Dutchman responded to every push with inch-perfect precision. Red Bull’s RB21, despite its tricky handling earlier in the season, looked dialed in under pressure.

“It was like he was on rails,” said Red Bull boss Christian Horner. “An absolutely inch-perfect race.”

What It Means For The Title Fight

The win propels Verstappen back into serious title contention, sitting just one point behind Norris in the Drivers' Championship standings. For McLaren, it’s a missed chance to solidify their lead, while Red Bull will take confidence in finally unlocking performance from their 2025 car.
