Maxwell guides Australia to thrilling two-wicket victory over South Africa in T20I series decider
Glenn Maxwell delivered a masterful unbeaten half-century to steer Australia to a nail-biting two-wicket victory over South Africa in the third Twenty20 International, securing a 2-1 series triumph at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns on Saturday.
Maxwell's commanding knock of 62 not out from 36 deliveries proved decisive as Australia successfully chased down a challenging target of 173 runs with just one ball remaining in a gripping series finale. The all-rounder's composed performance under pressure exemplified the fighting spirit that has become synonymous with Australian cricket in recent years.
The match reached its climax when Australia required 10 runs from the final over bowled by Lungi Ngidi. After collecting six runs from the first four deliveries, Maxwell produced a moment of brilliance with a reverse sweep that raced to the boundary, sealing Australia's dramatic victory and sending the home crowd into raptures.
"It was a little bit nerve-wracking," Maxwell reflected after earning the player of the match award. "I probably had to do the majority of the striking but, yeah, it was nice to get a couple out of the middle right near the end."
South Africa's innings had earlier provided its own share of excitement after they were invited to bat first. Despite losing three early wickets to slump to 49-3 within seven overs, the Proteas recovered through some explosive batting from Dewald Brevis, who top-scored with 53 runs.
Brevis showcased his aggressive intent by smashing Aaron Hardie for four consecutive sixes in a single over, forcing the Australian pace bowler out of the attack temporarily. The young South African batsman raced to his half-century in just 22 balls before Maxwell intervened with a spectacular running catch near the boundary rope off Nathan Ellis's bowling, who finished with impressive figures of 3-31.
Contributions from Tristan Stubbs (25) and Rassie van der Dussen (38 not out) helped South Africa reach a competitive total of 172-7, though they fell just short of the psychologically important 175-run mark.
Australia's chase began positively with captain Mitchell Marsh leading from the front, scoring 54 runs and establishing a solid 66-run opening partnership with Travis Head (19). The innings could have taken different turns when Kagiso Rabada dropped a return catch from Marsh on 26, while Aiden Markram similarly reprieved Head off his own bowling.
However, South Africa's bowling attack fought back admirably through Corbin Bosch's excellent spell that yielded 3-26. The medium-pacer dismissed Josh Inglis for a golden duck before teenage left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka produced a stunning over that accounted for both Marsh and Cameron Green (nine), dramatically shifting the momentum.
Rabada also contributed with a crucial two-wicket over, removing Tim David and Hardie to leave Australia's middle order exposed. Yet Maxwell's experience and temperament proved invaluable as he guided the hosts through the tense final overs to complete a memorable series victory.
