McEnroe says he can be the commissioner tennis needs amid doping crisis

Recent doping scandals involving prominent players have not tarnished the reputation of tennis; however, John McEnroe emphasized that appointing a single commissioner for the sport could significantly alleviate any confusion surrounding these incidents.

Jannik Sinner, the men's world number one, tested positive for trace amounts of the anabolic steroid clostebol in March but was exonerated by an independent tribunal that accepted his claim of unintentional contamination.

Iga Swiatek, the women's world number two, received a one-month suspension in November following a positive test for the hormone and metabolic modulator trimetazidine, which she attributed to contamination in her sleep medication.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), responsible for overseeing tennis's anti-doping efforts, stated that both instances were classified as "inadvertent breaches of the rules."

"I don't believe it has caused any harm because, comparatively, the situation is far worse in other sports," McEnroe, a former world number one and current ESPN analyst, remarked to reporters prior to the Australian Open.

"In my view, tennis is cleaner than any other sport. That said, it does not imply that there are no issues."

He noted that the confusion arising from the timing of information releases, such as Sinner's positive test at the Indian Wells tournament in March not being disclosed until just before the US Open in August, exacerbates the situation.

"That aspect is particularly concerning to me," he stated.

Rennae Stubbs, a former player and current coach and commentator for ESPN, remarked that players undergo frequent testing and that a commissioner could enhance transparency when a positive test occurs, especially when players' reputations are at stake.

"We require a commissioner for tennis who actively represents the players and advocates for them," she asserted.

"The fundamental issue is that there is no one advocating on their behalf."

McEnroe expressed his long-standing support for the establishment of a commissioner and stated that he has been "ready, willing, and able" to assume the role.

"If I were not the commissioner, there should still be someone in that position," he concluded.

It appears unlikely that this will come to fruition, as individuals are preoccupied with their own agendas, and these tournaments prioritize their self-interests. Their focus is primarily on personal gain rather than the advancement of the sport.

This is unfortunate. However, if I am not the one to bring about change, it should be someone else. We shall see if any progress is made in the next decade.
