McLaren's Oscar Piastri wins 50th F1 race at Bahrain Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri delivered a flawless performance to take victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix, celebrating his 50th Formula One race in style with a lights-to-flag win from pole position. The McLaren driver not only claimed his second win of the season but also propelled himself to second place in the drivers' standings—just three points behind teammate Lando Norris.

McLaren Make History in the Desert

For the first time since Bahrain debuted on the F1 calendar in 2004, McLaren triumphed at the Sakhir International Circuit, a track that had long eluded them—making Piastri’s milestone victory all the more historic. Despite a safety car on lap 32 that erased his seven-second lead, the 23-year-old Australian remained composed, eventually crossing the line 15.499 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell.

🏁 “It’s been an incredible weekend,” said Piastri. “It’s a very important win for us given our owners. This track has never been kind to us, so to finish the job today in style is really nice.”

Norris Recovers for Podium After False Start Penalty

Norris, who began the race from sixth, fought his way back to a third-place finish after being handed a five-second time penalty for a false start. The McLaren ace admitted to creeping forward too much before lights out—his first ever such mistake in F1.

🎙️ “It shouldn’t happen, but it did,” Norris said. “It was a messy race for me. I’m disappointed not to bring home a one-two for McLaren.”

Despite the mishap, Norris retains the championship lead with 77 points, closely followed by Piastri (74), while McLaren leads the constructors’ standings on 151 points—well ahead of Mercedes (93).

Russell Defends Second Amid Car Trouble

George Russell held off a hard-charging Norris in the final laps, despite wrestling with a brake-by-wire failure and an unresponsive steering wheel.

⚙️ “I didn’t know what was going on,” said Russell. “One more lap and Lando would have had me comfortably.”

Although called to the stewards for a potential DRS violation, no action was taken and the results stood.

Ferrari and Red Bull Falter

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and fifth, respectively, both opting for a medium-tire strategy that didn’t pay off against the soft runners from McLaren and Mercedes.

Defending world champion Max Verstappen could only manage sixth, suffering a faulty pit signal that derailed his race and dropped him to third in the standings, just behind Piastri.

Points for Alpine, Haas, and Tsunoda

  • Pierre Gasly secured Alpine’s first points of the season in seventh.
  • Esteban Ocon, recovering from a qualifying crash, claimed eighth for Haas.
  • Yuki Tsunoda finished ninth, giving Red Bull its first double points finish of 2025.
  • British rookie Oliver Bearman impressed by earning the final point in 10th, climbing from the back of the grid.
