EPL: McTominay's Late Double Saves Man Utd From Brentford Defeat

Scott McTominay emerged as the hero for Manchester United with two late goals to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Brentford. The match had its share of surprises, with Brentford initially taking the lead and United struggling to find their rhythm. McTominay's late-game heroics not only saved the day but also eased the mounting pressure on the team and its manager.

The Scottish midfielder, renowned for his scoring prowess on the international stage, entered the fray in the 87th minute under Erik ten Hag's direction. McTominay found the back of the net on three occasions, but his first attempt was disallowed for offside. However, he made amends with two strikes in the final six minutes of added time, alleviating the mounting pressure on his manager.

Ten Hag faced challenges, including a growing injury list in defense, compounded by the absence of Raphael Varane, and unavailable players like Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tyrell Malacia, and Sergio Reguilon. This forced the out-of-favor Harry Maguire to partner with the 35-year-old Jonny Evans in central defense.

Nonetheless, it was United's beleaguered goalkeeper who was at fault for Brentford's opener. Casemiro also contributed to the mishap by surrendering possession to Yoane Wissa, who penetrated the United box. Victor Lindelof's clearance attempt ricocheted off Wissa and into Jensen's path. Despite the Dane's low shot, Onana should have prevented it, but the ball slipped through his grasp.

Onana, signed for a substantial fee from Inter Milan in July, had previously made critical errors as United suffered defeats in their first two Champions League group stage matches, a lack of confidence that spilled over into Premier League action.

United struggled to find an equalizer and faced the prospect of repeating their previous weekend's 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace. Marcus Rashford managed to test Brentford's stand-in goalkeeper, Thomas Strakosha, at his near post, but he remained a shadow of the player who had netted 30 goals the previous season. The home crowd even cheered when Rashford was substituted for Alejandro Garnacho just after the hour mark.

Ten Hag also made a statement by replacing the out-of-form Casemiro in the second half. Antony made his entrance for the final half-hour, marking his Premier League return following a leave of absence due to domestic abuse allegations.

Yet, it was another substitute who may have turned the tide for United. McTominay believed he had been denied his moment of glory when Anthony Martial was ruled offside for a slight touch on Garnacho's cross. Strakosha, making his Premier League debut, did not cover himself in glory, undoing all of Brentford's commendable late-game efforts.

First, he fumbled Diogo Dalot's shot, and McTominay masterfully controlled and buried the loose ball. Strakosha could have done better with the winner as he failed to claw out McTominay's header from Maguire's flick-on, igniting frenzied celebrations among the home fans.

Manchester United's season received a much-needed boost thanks to McTominay's last-gasp heroics against a spirited Brentford side.
