Melanie de Jesus dos Santos crashes out of Paris Games

Melanie de Jesus dos Santos, a 24-year-old gymnast from France, experienced a disappointing performance at the Bercy Arena on Sunday, marking the end of her Olympic journey as she failed to qualify for any gymnastics finals.

The French team faced an unexpected elimination from the team competition, compounding the disappointment.

As one of the prominent figures of the Games, de Jesus dos Santos was visibly emotional, shedding tears after a challenging performance despite the enthusiastic support from the home crowd during what she has indicated may be her final Olympic appearance.

"I am disappointed in myself. I endeavored to remain strong, but I was unable to do so," a tearful de Jesus dos Santos expressed to Eurosport.

"My mental resilience faltered. I prepared thoroughly to be strong today, yet I fell short. I feel as though I have missed my Olympic opportunity.

"I have dedicated two years of hard work, and it feels as if it has all been in vain. Today, there is nothing positive to take away.

"I believe these were my last Games, and I did not manage to enjoy them. I did not have fun. However, I am grateful for the crowd's support; it truly warms my heart."

Beginning her routine on the uneven bars, de Jesus dos Santos encountered an early fall. Although she managed to recover and complete the dismount, the initial error set a troubling tone for her performance.

Her subsequent routine on the balance beam was shaky, highlighted by a moment when she had to grasp the apparatus to prevent a fall.

The situation did not improve during the floor exercise, where she failed to execute a double flip in the stretched position, resulting in her knees and hands hitting the mat. She appeared dejected after concluding her performance on the vault.

Expectations were high for de Jesus dos Santos, a four-time European champion who relocated to Houston over two years ago to train at Simone Biles' gymnastics club, led by Cecile and Laurent Landi.

Unfortunately, her aspirations, along with those of the French team, did not materialize, as they were seen comforting one another after their failure to qualify for Tuesday's team final competition.

No member of the French team will have the opportunity to compete again following the conclusion of the qualifying rounds on Sunday.

Ming van Eijken informed the reporters that they did not participate in the competition at the expected level and did not put in enough effort. She mentioned that they reminded themselves to stay positive despite the outcome.
