Messi and Miami eliminated from MLS playoff contention

Lionel Messi's eagerly anticipated debut season in Major League Soccer (MLS) has concluded on a bittersweet note, with Inter Miami's playoff hopes dashed following a 1-0 loss to FC Cincinnati. Despite Messi's arrival generating immense excitement, Inter Miami's campaign in the MLS will not extend to the playoffs.
Messi, who had missed five of the team's previous six games due to a leg injury, entered the match in the 55th minute. Although his presence invigorated fans and showcased his undeniable talent, he has not found the back of the net in four consecutive league games since his dramatic goal in the 89th minute during his MLS debut.
Upon entering the match, Messi drew a foul and secured a free-kick opportunity in the 59th minute. However, his free-kick attempt from 25 yards sailed wide and high. Messi's limited playing time in recent weeks due to injury likely contributed to his performance.
Cincinnati, currently leading the Eastern Conference, secured the victory with Álvaro Barreal's goal in the 78th minute. The pivotal goal came after Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender saved Yuya Kubo's shot, and Barreal capitalized on the rebound with a left-footed strike from 8 yards.
The loss dealt a significant blow to Inter Miami's playoff aspirations, leaving them with 33 points and just two matches remaining. The eighth-place Montreal Impact solidified their playoff chances with a 4-1 win over Portland.
Inter Miami coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino expressed his perspective on Messi's performance, acknowledging the challenge of regaining rhythm after an injury-induced hiatus. He also stated his initial aim to build the club and secure a playoff berth.
Messi's tenure in the MLS proved to be a remarkable one, with 12 goals in 13 combined league and cup matches since joining Miami in July. The team was unbeaten in all 12 matches with Messi before the recent loss.
With Inter Miami's season ending, Messi will shift his focus to international duties. He is set to join the Argentina national team for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru on October 12 and 17, respectively. Maintaining Messi's fitness for these crucial qualifiers will be a priority.
Inter Miami's remaining league matches will see them face Charlotte on October 18 and 21 in a home and away series.
