Messi inspires Inter Miami to first MLS Cup title in 3–1 triumph over Vancouver

Lionel Messi delivered a masterclass performance as Inter Miami claimed their first-ever MLS Cup, defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 on Saturday at Chase Stadium. The Argentine superstar orchestrated the victory with two assists and a key role in the team’s third goal, sparking celebrations among a jubilant home crowd.

The game began with an early stroke of luck for Miami when Edier Ocampo inadvertently scored an own goal in the 8th minute. Vancouver responded with determination, and Ali Ahmed equalized in the 60th minute, momentarily silencing the Miami faithful.

But Messi, as he has done countless times on the global stage, turned the tide. In the 72nd minute, he intercepted a careless Andres Cubas pass and threaded a perfect assist to Rodrigo De Paul, restoring Miami’s lead. In stoppage time, Messi’s precision struck again, setting up Tadeo Allende for a late goal to seal the 3-1 triumph.

A dream realized for David Beckham and Inter Miami

For co-owner David Beckham, the victory represents the culmination of a 12-year vision to establish a winning soccer franchise in South Florida. Beckham, who retired from playing in 2013, had long pursued the creation of an MLS team. Partnering with Miami businessmen Jorge Mas and Jose Mas, he finally saw Inter Miami take the field in 2020 and, three years later, recruit Messi.

There were a lot of sleepless nights, but I always believed,” Beckham said. “We promised our fans success, and today we’ve achieved that.”

Messi’s magic on display

Messi’s influence was unmistakable throughout the MLS Cup final. Beyond the two assists, he dictated play, created chances, and provided leadership that elevated his teammates. The clinching pass to De Paul highlighted his vision, speed, and composure under pressure, while his final assist to Allende encapsulated his enduring genius.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber celebrated the moment, noting, “Inter Miami fans, has soccer made it? It has in South Florida, thanks to Messi.”

Farewell to Legends

The victory also marked the end of an era for former Spanish internationals Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, who retired following the triumph. Their experience, alongside Messi and teammates like Luis Suarez and Javier Mascherano, helped Miami rise from last place to champions in just a few seasons.

Mascherano, now the club’s coach, implemented tactical changes midseason that allowed Messi and the team to flourish. With Messi still performing at an elite level at 38, Inter Miami looks poised for continued success, especially with a new stadium opening near Miami International Airport next season.

The Historic Win

  • Final Score: Inter Miami 3 – 1 Vancouver Whitecaps
  • Goal Scorers: Ocampo OG (8’), Ali Ahmed (60’), De Paul (72’), Allende (90+6’)
  • Key Player: Lionel Messi – 2 assists, game-changing contributions

Inter Miami became the 16th franchise in MLS history to lift the trophy, maintaining the league’s competitive parity. The victory adds to Messi’s record haul, marking at least 47 career trophies, and extends his dominance in high-stakes finals.

Messi’s Legacy in MLS

Messi didn’t need the MLS Cup to cement his legacy, having already conquered the World Cup, Champions League, and countless domestic titles. But his arrival in Miami transformed a struggling expansion team into champions, while also igniting soccer’s popularity in South Florida.

Beckham praised Messi’s dedication, saying, “He’s not just here to enjoy living in Miami… he’s come here to win. Leo is a winner. It’s simple as that.”

With the MLS Cup secured, Inter Miami and Messi now set their sights on defending the title next season, aiming to build a dynasty in South Florida.
