Miami Dolphins' Record-Setting Triumph: A 70-20 Rout, But Some Milestones Missed

Last week, the Miami Dolphins created a whirlwind of records as they trounced the Denver Broncos with a remarkable 70-20 victory. While they achieved numerous historic feats, including ten touchdowns from scrimmage and over 350 yards both through the air and on the ground, they fell short of a few elusive milestones due to strategic decisions and historical quirks.

The Dolphins' remarkable win against the Broncos was a display of offensive brilliance. It marked several firsts, including being the first team with ten touchdowns from scrimmage and the first to gain over 350 yards both passing and rushing.

Miami was on the cusp of becoming the first team since 1966 to score over 70 points in a game. However, coach Mike McDaniel opted for a conservative approach, having Mike White take a knee on fourth down from the Denver 27 with 33 seconds left.

Coach Otto Graham's decision to go for a field goal in 1966 when his team scored 72 points contrasts starkly with McDaniel's choice. The result: Miami missed out on setting the record for points in a regular-season game.

The kneel down also prevented the Dolphins from achieving the highest yards per play in a game in the last 50 years. They finished at 10.23 yards per play, just slightly behind Kansas City's 10.3 in a 2017 game against the Jets.

Miami accumulated 726 total yards, a remarkable feat, with 350 yards rushing and 376 yards passing. However, a historical quirk involving sack yards kept them just shy of the record held by the Rams in 1951.

Tua Tagovailoa's four touchdown passes, Tyreek Hill's 33rd touchdown of at least 40 yards, and the achievement of Raheem Mostert and De'Von Achane in scoring four touchdowns each in a game were standout performances.

The Dolphins' offensive success is undeniably fueled by speed. They feature several of the fastest players in the NFL, with their ball carriers consistently topping the speed charts. The Vikings and Giants attempted record blitzing rates against their opponents, but these strategies largely backfired, with Justin Herbert and Brock Purdy effectively countering the high-pressure approach.

Kickers across the NFL had a record-setting week, with Matt Gay's four field goals from at least 50 yards in one game standing out. Prater's 62-yarder and Houston's exceptional special teams play also added to the kicking game's excitement.

Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings has had a productive start to the season, becoming the fifth player in NFL history to throw for over 325 yards and two TDs in each of the first three games. However, his team's 0-3 record reflects a stark contrast to previous players who achieved this feat and enjoyed victories.

The Miami Dolphins' record-setting triumph will be remembered as a historic moment in NFL history, even if a few milestones slipped through their grasp.
