Miami Dolphins' Tyreek Hill detained for driving violation as police order review

The Miami-Dade Police Department has announced that it will investigate the circumstances surrounding the detainment of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (30), who was found face down on the ground and in handcuffs following a traffic stop for a driving infraction on Sunday, just prior to the NFL team's season opener.

Hill, a five-time All-Pro player who topped the Dolphins in receiving yards last season, was apprehended by law enforcement near the Dolphins' home stadium but was released in time to participate in the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by officers of the Miami-Dade Police Department," stated Miami-Dade police director Stephanie V. Daniels in a message shared on X.

"I have initiated an immediate review of all aspects of the incident, and we are also examining the available body camera footage. Updates will be provided as more information comes to light."

In a discussion with NFL Network, Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, described the situation as "very upsetting," noting that his client was distressed but ultimately unharmed.

"Seeing my client in handcuffs, along with some of the footage we have observed, is unwarranted," Rosenhaus remarked during NFL GameDay Morning. "There was no justification for the treatment Tyreek received."

The Dolphins confirmed that Hill was briefly held approximately one block from their stadium.

"Several teammates witnessed the incident and stopped to provide support," the Dolphins stated on X. "Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived at the stadium and will be ready for today's game."

During the third quarter of Sunday’s match, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa connected with Hill for an 80-yard touchdown, narrowing the score to 17-14 late in the third quarter.

Hill was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft and enjoyed a Super Bowl victory during his six seasons with the team before being traded to Miami in 2022 in exchange for five draft picks.
