Miami Heat suspend Jimmy Butler for seven games due to misconduct; team open to trade options

Miami Heat has suspended six-time NBA All-Star forward Jimmy Butler (35) for seven games due to conduct deemed detrimental to the team, and the organization is now open to trade proposals.

This decision follows Butler's recent comments expressing a loss of joy in playing in the NBA and suggesting that remaining with the Heat would not restore that joy. The team has taken this step in response to weeks of critical remarks and discussions regarding a potential trade.

In an official statement, the Heat announced, "We have suspended Jimmy Butler for seven games due to multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team throughout the season, particularly in recent weeks."

The statement further noted, "His actions and comments indicate that he no longer wishes to be part of this team. Jimmy Butler and his representative have expressed a desire to be traded, and as such, we will consider offers."

Butler, who managed to score only nine points in a loss to Indiana on Thursday, will not return until a home game against Denver on January 17, missing the upcoming home game against Utah and a six-game road trip on the West Coast.

However, it is likely that the Heat may finalize a trade for the 35-year-old player before his return.

"I want to regain my joy in playing basketball. Wherever that may be, we will find out soon," Butler stated on Thursday.

This season, Butler is averaging 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game for the Heat, who currently hold the sixth position in the Eastern Conference with a record of 17-15.

In his 15th NBA season, Butler played a pivotal role in leading the Heat to the NBA Finals in 2020, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers, and again in 2023, where they lost to Denver.
