Michel admits some teams remain a significant challenge for his side following defeat to Real Madrid
Girona is currently facing challenges in replicating the remarkable success of the previous season, during which they unexpectedly secured a third-place finish in LaLiga. Following a 3-0 defeat at home to Real Madrid on Saturday, coach Michel expressed that the team is struggling to compete with the elite clubs.
This loss marked Girona's fourth consecutive game without a victory across all competitions, leaving them in eighth place in the league, just two positions shy of the final European qualification spot.
Additionally, the team is experiencing a difficult initiation into the Champions League, having lost four out of their first five matches, and they were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by fourth-tier Logrones earlier in the week.
"There are matches that currently feel a bit overwhelming for us, such as this one against Real Madrid and some of the Champions League fixtures," Michel stated during a press conference.
"This situation is challenging because the players recognize that last year was significantly better, and this season has proven to be more difficult."
Michel noted that a recent positive streak in the league had fostered optimism regarding their progress.
"We had gone four matches unbeaten in LaLiga, but today's loss has raised expectations," he continued. "I have expressed my desire to qualify for Europe, and I aim to provide this squad with the necessary motivation. The sheer number of matches across three competitions is taking a toll on us."
He also highlighted the impact of player turnover, with several departures and arrivals during the summer transfer window.
"It is challenging from a structural standpoint due to the significant changes in the squad. We have not had ample opportunities to train together, and we faced numerous difficulties in preparing for the season," the Spaniard remarked.
"Any comparisons to the past tend to be unfavorable. We are an emerging club, and we are making progress. We had to part with some players."
