Mirra Andreeva makes history with WTA 1000 triumph at Dubai Tennis Championships

Mirra Andreeva etched her name into the record books as the youngest-ever WTA 1000 champion, securing a commanding 7-6(1), 6-1 victory over Clara Tauson in the Dubai Tennis Championships final on Saturday.

The 17-year-old Russian, who impressively defeated three Grand Slam champions—Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek, and Elena Rybakina—on her way to the final, is set to break into the top 10 of the WTA rankings next week.

"I'd set a goal for myself to be in top 10 by the end of the year. Now it's the end of February and I've already made it, so this is something incredible for me," Andreeva said, reflecting on her milestone achievement.

The match saw an early surge from Tauson, who capitalized on a strong serve while Andreeva struggled with nerves, committing two double faults to trail 2-0. However, the young Russian quickly regained composure, leveling the score at 2-2 and showcasing her fearless shot-making. The first set remained closely contested, ultimately heading into a tiebreak where Andreeva, yet to drop one this season, delivered a flawless performance to take the lead.

A medical timeout for Tauson before the second set did little to halt Andreeva’s momentum. Despite some impressive drop shots from the Danish player, Andreeva grew in confidence, racing to a 4-1 lead. Under the guidance of former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, the teenager took control of the rallies, unleashing powerful winners and overhead smashes that left her opponent struggling to respond.

Sensing victory, Andreeva served for the championship at 5-1 and clinched the title when Tauson sent a return long on her second match point. Her triumph also placed her in elite company, as only the second teenager—male or female—to claim the Dubai crown since Rafael Nadal in 2006.

"Lastly, I want to thank me for never quitting and always believing in myself," Andreeva said with a smile as she lifted the trophy, celebrating a breakthrough moment in her young career.
