MLB roundup: Brewers clinch NL Central and walk off Phillies

Jake Bauers delivered a decisive bases-loaded single in the ninth inning, securing a 2-1 victory for Milwaukee against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies in the concluding game of a three-game series between division leaders. This triumph followed the Brewers' earlier clinching of the National League Central title on Wednesday.
In the ninth inning, rookie Jackson Chourio hit a triple into the right-field corner on the second pitch from Carlos Estevez (4-5). Following this, William Contreras was intentionally walked and advanced to second due to a catcher's indifference. Willy Adames then walked, loading the bases with one out. Bauers subsequently connected with the first pitch, driving it down the right field line to secure the series victory for the Brewers.
Milwaukee's NL Central title was confirmed by the Chicago Cubs' 5-3 loss to Oakland earlier in the day. This marks the Brewers' second consecutive division title, their third in the last four seasons, and their fourth in the last seven years.
The defeat hindered the Phillies from securing a postseason spot. Philadelphia, which boasts the best record in baseball, maintains a seven-game lead over the Mets in the NL East and is just one game ahead of the Dodgers for the top record in the National League.
Phillies starter Aaron Nola permitted one run—a sixth-inning home run by Rhys Hoskins—across seven innings, yielding three hits while striking out nine and walking one. On the other hand, Brewers starter Freddy Peralta also allowed one run, which came from Alec Bohm's leadoff homer in the second inning, over five innings, striking out nine and issuing two walks.
Yankees 2, Mariners 1 (10 innings)
In a thrilling matchup, Anthony Rizzo delivered a crucial double in the top of the 10th inning, securing the decisive run for New York as they triumphed over the Seattle Mariners, thereby securing a spot in the American League playoffs.
This victory marked the Yankees' sixth win in their last seven games, solidifying their position for at least a wild-card berth. They currently hold a five-game advantage over Baltimore in the AL East standings. Meanwhile, the Mariners find themselves five games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West and three games shy of the final wild-card position.
During the 10th inning, with Jasson Dominguez serving as the automatic runner, Rizzo connected with the first pitch from Mariners reliever Collin Snider (3-4), driving the ball into the right-field corner. In a pivotal moment at the bottom of the 10th, Yankees catcher Austin Wells successfully picked off Julio Rodriguez at third base after Rodriguez evaded a tag from Randy Arozarena following a strikeout. Ian Hamilton then struck out Justin Turner, sealing the game for New York.
Dodgers 8, Marlins 4
Shohei Ohtani moved closer to achieving the remarkable 50-50 milestone as the Los Angeles Dodgers overcame the Miami Marlins.
Ohtani recorded his 49th stolen base and has hit 48 home runs this season, aiming to become the first player in Major League Baseball history to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season.
Marlins starting pitcher Ryan Weathers (3-6) made his return to the mound after an injury to his left index finger, lasting 4 1/3 innings while conceding eight hits and six runs (five earned).
Padres 4, Astros 0
Dylan Cease delivered an outstanding performance, allowing only two hits over 8 1/3 innings, while Manny Machado contributed significantly with two home runs, leading the San Diego Padres to a shutout victory against the Houston Astros in a closely contested interleague series between playoff hopefuls.
Tanner Scott emerged from the bullpen to secure the final two outs, earning his third save with San Diego and his 21st overall. The Padres maintained a 2 1/2-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets for the first wild-card spot in the National League, while remaining 3 1/2 games behind.
Athletics 5, Cubs 3
Zack Gelof contributed significantly by hitting a double that brought in the decisive run and later scored during a two-run eighth inning, leading the visiting Oakland team to push Chicago to the brink of playoff elimination.
Tyler Soderstrom recorded two hits, one of which was a home run, while also scoring two runs and driving in two for the Athletics, who concluded their interleague schedule with a commendable winning record of 24-22.
Despite a strong performance from Justin Steele, who pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings in a valiant effort, the Cubs now find themselves seven games behind the final National League wild-card position with only ten games left in the season.
