MLB roundup: Brewers erase eight-run deficit to stun Diamondbacks, Ohtani shines again

Jake Bauers (28) contributed a crucial go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, enabling the Milwaukee Brewers to stage a remarkable comeback from an eight-run deficit and secure a 10-9 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon.

The Brewers found themselves trailing 8-0 after the Diamondbacks unleashed a seven-run third inning, which included back-to-back home runs from Josh Bell, who hit a two-run shot, and Eugenio Suarez, along with a two-run single from Jake McCarthy.

However, Milwaukee gradually mounted a comeback, culminating in a four-run eighth inning. With two outs, Garrett Mitchell delivered an RBI single to left field, followed by Rhys Hoskins, who added two more runs with a base hit, leveling the score at 9. Willy Adames then hit a double, setting the stage for Bauers to give Milwaukee its first lead of the game.

For the Diamondbacks, Ketel Marte, Josh Bell, and Eugenio Suarez each hit home runs. This loss placed Arizona in a tie with the New York Mets for the final two National League wild-card spots, with both teams holding a two-game lead over the Atlanta Braves.

In another matchup, the San Diego Padres triumphed over the Chicago White Sox with a score of 4-2, thanks to a three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning. This victory brought the Padres within one win of securing a National League playoff spot, while the White Sox's record (36-120) matched the 1962 New York Mets for the most losses in a single season in modern MLB history. A single loss in their remaining six games would see the Mets lose this dubious record.

Jeremiah Estrada (6-2) secured the win by pitching a flawless eighth inning, as the Padres improved to 90-66, marking their first 90-win season since 2010 and the fifth in the franchise's history. San Diego now leads the Diamondbacks and Mets by three games for the top wild-card position in the National League, while trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers by three games in the NL West standings.

Mets 2 Phillies 1
Brandon Nimmo launched a home run to start the sixth inning, contributing to New York's momentum as they thwarted Philadelphia's attempt to secure the National League East title in the concluding game of a four-game series.

Edwin Diaz achieved his first six-out save since August 4, 2022, for the Mets, who have recorded an impressive 18 wins in their last 23 games.

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler suffered a tough loss, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight over more than seven innings.

Dodgers 6 Rockies 5
Shohei Ohtani equalized the game with a home run to open the ninth inning, followed by Mookie Betts delivering a game-winning home run as Los Angeles overcame Colorado at home.

Ohtani, a leading candidate to be the first primary designated hitter to win the MVP award, recorded four hits and two stolen bases. His home run marked his 53rd of the season, complementing his 55 stolen bases. Teoscar Hernandez and Enrique Hernandez also contributed home runs for the Dodgers.

Brendan Rodgers and Nolan Jones each brought in two runs for the Rockies, who must secure three victories in their final six games to avoid a second consecutive season with 100 losses. Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela allowed one run and five hits over five innings in his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery.

Rangers 6 Mariners 5
Marcus Semien delivered a walk-off RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, completing Texas' comeback against Seattle in Arlington, Texas.

Semien's single to left field brought home Leody Taveras, who had previously singled and stolen second base. The Rangers managed to avoid a sweep by the Mariners and ended Seattle's three-game winning streak.

The Mariners, who held a 5-0 lead, saw their advantage diminish as the Rangers scored four runs in the sixth inning. Taveras then tied the game with a solo home run in the seventh inning.
