MLB roundup: Darvish tames Ohtani as Padres thrash Dodgers, Phillies win thriller with Mets

Yu Darvish delivered an exceptional pitching performance, effectively neutralizing Shohei Ohtani as the San Diego Padres decisively defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-2, thereby leveling the series on Sunday.
The Japanese pitcher successfully retired Dodgers star Ohtani three times without allowing a hit during a remarkable outing at Dodger Stadium, positioning the Padres favorably in the best-of-five National League Division Series.
Darvish, who previously played for the Dodgers in 2017, exhibited complete control over Los Angeles's formidable offense, allowing only three hits and one run over seven innings.
Meanwhile, the Padres' offense was relentless against the Dodgers' pitching staff.
Fernando Tatis Jr. set the early tone with a home run in the first inning off Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty, followed by David Peralta, who contributed a two-run homer in the second inning.
In the sixth inning, Jackson Merrill's single brought Tatis home, extending the lead to 4-1. Merrill then added a two-run homer in the eighth inning, and Xander Bogaerts followed with an insurance run, increasing the score to 7-1.
In the ninth inning, Kyle Higashioka and Tatis capped off the victory with solo home runs, further showcasing the Padres' offensive prowess.
"There was a lot of emotion, but we managed those feelings and executed our game plan today," remarked Tatis, who hit two home runs. "If we continue to perform like this, our potential is limitless."
Tensions escalated in the bottom of the seventh inning when Dodgers fans threw debris onto the field, causing a delay as security intervened.
"It's a spectacle, and some fans became frustrated as our team took the lead," Tatis commented. "However, this is the playoffs, and we thrive in this atmosphere. I relish every moment of it."
This victory places the Padres in a strong position as the best-of-five series shifts to San Diego for games three and four on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In other playoff news on Sunday, Nick Castellanos emerged as the hero for the Philadelphia Phillies, leading them to a thrilling 7-6 walk-off win against the New York Mets.
Castellanos's line drive to left field propelled shortstop Trea Turner across home plate, clinching the winning run in the thrilling conclusion of yet another intense matchup between the two National League divisional rivals at Citizens Bank Park.
"Unbelievable," Castellanos remarked. "It was incredible. The series is tied, but there remains a significant amount of baseball to be played. We must quickly shift our focus to game three."
The underdog Mets, who had surprised the Phillies with a 6-2 victory in game one on Saturday, once again demonstrated their resilience in a contest characterized by its back-and-forth nature.
Mark Vientos launched a two-run homer in the third inning, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead, followed by Pete Alonso's powerful 370-foot home run to right center field, extending the visitors' advantage to 3-0 in the top of the sixth.
However, after a combined 13 innings without scoring in games one and two, the Phillies' offense erupted in the sixth inning.
Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer, narrowing the gap to 3-2, and Castellanos followed suit with a 425-foot home run, leveling the score in the same inning.
The Mets regained the lead with a home run from Brandon Nimmo in the top of the seventh, but the Phillies responded with two runs, taking a 5-4 lead after Bryson Stott's triple in the bottom of the eighth.
Stott added another run when J.T. Realmuto reached on a fielder's choice, positioning the Phillies for a potential victory at 6-4 as they entered the final inning.
Nevertheless, the Mets, known for their late-game comebacks throughout the postseason, were not finished.
Vientos hit his second home run of the game, scoring alongside Francisco Lindor to tie the game at 6-6 before Castellanos once again came to the Phillies' rescue.
Game three of the best-of-five series is scheduled to take place in New York on Tuesday.
