MLB roundup: Guardians outlast the Yankees in 12 innings

Lane Thomas, serving as a pinch hitter, delivered a crucial double that initiated a six-run 12th inning for the Cleveland Guardians, leading to a hard-fought 9-5 victory against the New York Yankees on Tuesday evening.

Thomas's performance was instrumental in helping the Guardians avert a fourth consecutive defeat, marking their sixth win in 16 games. The team exhibited a remarkable discipline at the plate, drawing 14 walks, leaving 20 runners on base, and achieving a 7-for-24 success rate with runners in scoring position.

Jose Ramirez extended the lead with an RBI single, while David Fry significantly widened the gap with a bases-clearing triple. Jhonkensy Noel concluded the impressive inning with an RBI infield single. Tim Herrin (5-0) successfully stranded two runners in the 11th inning prior to Cleveland's explosive frame.

For the Yankees, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto launched back-to-back home runs in the first inning. Judge later contributed a two-run double off Scott Barlow in the bottom of the 12th, before Alex Verdugo recorded the final out of the lengthy 4-hour, 5-minute contest. Tim Mayza (0-2) was charged with the loss.

In another matchup, the Boston Red Sox triumphed over the Houston Astros with a score of 6-5. Jarren Duran concluded a stellar four-hit performance with a two-out, tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning, propelling the visiting Red Sox past the Astros.

Duran's impressive statistics included his 17th home run, three runs scored, two runs batted in, and a walk. Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta allowed five runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. However, four relievers effectively silenced the Astros over the final four innings, with closer Kenley Jansen securing his 24th save with a flawless ninth inning.

The Astros responded to Boston's three-run first inning by matching it with three runs of their own, highlighted by a two-run homer from Jon Singleton. Yainer Diaz also homered for the second consecutive game.

Braves 3, Phillies 1
Marcell Ozuna initiated the sixth inning with a decisive home run, propelling Atlanta to victory over the visiting Philadelphia in the first game of a three-match series.

Atlanta has triumphed in five of their seven encounters with Philadelphia this season. Reynaldo Lopez, the Atlanta starter, made his return after a three-week stint on the injured list, completing five innings of play. The right-handed pitcher, who had been recovering from a forearm injury, conceded one run on five hits and one walk, achieving a season-high of 10 strikeouts.

Zack Wheeler (12-6) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits while recording eight strikeouts and issuing no walks, as he aimed for his 100th career victory.

Rockies 3, Nationals 1
Austin Gomber delivered an impressive performance over seven innings as the visiting Colorado team commenced a three-game series against Washington.

Brenton Doyle, Ryan McMahon, and Ezequiel Tovar each contributed two hits for Colorado, who have secured victories in three of their last four contests. Gomber (4-8) permitted one run on three hits, along with two walks and five strikeouts.

CJ Abrams hit a home run for Washington, who were outperformed in hits 10-5 and suffered their fifth loss in the last six games.

Diamondbacks 3, Marlins 1
Corbin Carroll hit a home run, scored twice, and executed a sliding catch in right field that likely prevented two runs as Arizona overcame the Miami team.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also contributed a home run for the Diamondbacks, who will seek a three-game sweep on Wednesday. Arizona's starting pitcher, Eduardo Rodriguez (2-0), allowed six hits and one run over 5 1/3 innings.

Marlins starter Edward Cabrera (2-5) surrendered four hits, three walks, and three runs in six innings, while striking out three batters.
