MLB roundup: Joey Estes blanks Angels, Phillies secure third straight win

Joey Estes threw a five-hit shutout as the Oakland Athletics secured a 5-0 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night for their second consecutive win.

At 22 years and 269 days, Estes became the youngest major-leaguer to pitch a shutout since Zach Eflin did so for the Philadelphia Phillies at age 22 years and 105 days in July 2016. In just his 12th big-league start, Estes (3-3) did not allow an extra-base hit, walking one and striking out four.

Brent Rooker hit a home run for the second night in a row, and Max Schuemann also went deep for the A's, who will aim for a series sweep on Thursday afternoon. Brett Harris contributed with an RBI single.

Angels starter Davis Daniel (1-1) gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings, striking out three.

Joey Estes, at 22 years old, pitched a five-hit shutout for the Oakland Athletics against the Arizona Diamondbacks, winning 12-4 over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Christian Walker hit two home runs, continuing to dominate the Dodgers with seven home runs in eight games this season. Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also contributed with home runs for Arizona.

Despite giving up four runs early in his debut, Cristian Mena settled in, and the Diamondbacks' pitching held strong. Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez hit back-to-back home runs for the Dodgers, but it wasn't enough as they fell to Arizona.

Dean Kremer pitched five scoreless innings for the Baltimore Orioles in a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Craig Kimbrel closed the game with his 21st save of the season.

Joey Estes, at 22 years and 269 days, became the youngest pitcher to throw a shutout since 2016. Brent Rooker and Max Schuemann also homered for the A's in the win. Davis Daniel took the loss for the Angels, giving up five runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-3, with Rafael Marchan hitting a solo home run and Alec Bohm adding a two-run blast. The Phillies scored two runs in the eighth inning against reliever Tyson Miller to break the tie.

Matt Strahm replaced Zack Wheeler in the seventh inning and earned the win for Philadelphia. Jose Alvarado secured his 13th save, working around a one-out single in the ninth.

Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled twice and drove in two runs for Chicago, which suffered its eighth loss in 10 games.
