MLB roundup: Juan Soto clubs fourteenth home run as Yankees blasts Mariners

Juan Soto achieved a significant milestone with a home run, while Aaron Judge contributed four runs as the New York Yankees decisively defeated the Seattle Mariners 11-2 on Tuesday.

Jasson Dominguez also hit a home run for the Yankees, who increased their lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East to four games. Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (14-6) permitted one run on four hits across five innings.

Soto's two-run homer in the fourth inning against Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo (8-3) marked his 40th home run of the season and the 200th of his career, making him the first player to hit home runs in every major league stadium.

Julio Rodriguez had an impressive performance, going 4-for-5, while Jorge Polanco and Luke Raley each contributed solo home runs for the Mariners, who now trail by three games for the final AL wild-card spot. Woo surrendered seven runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

In another matchup, the Marlins triumphed over the Dodgers 11-9. Jesus Sanchez excelled with a 5-for-5 performance, including three RBIs, two doubles, and two runs scored.

Jake Burger also had a standout game for the Marlins, driving in four runs with two run-scoring groundouts and a two-run homer.

For the Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani hit his National League-leading 48th home run of the season, finishing 1-for-5 with two RBIs. Ohtani, who ranks second in the majors with 48 stolen bases, did not add to his total as he aims to become the first player in major league history to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season.

Astros 4, Padres 3 (10 innings)
Kyle Tucker's run-scoring single in the top of the 10th inning propelled the visiting Houston team to a victory over San Diego. This hit brought Grae Kessinger, the automatic runner who started the inning at second base, home. Yordan Alvarez's groundout advanced Kessinger to third base prior to Tucker's single off Adrian Morejon (2-2).

This performance secured a win for Josh Hader (8-7), who, despite failing to save the game, successfully retired all four batters he faced. Hector Neris navigated a challenging situation in the bottom of the 10th, escaping a bases-loaded, two-out predicament by inducing Manny Machado to ground into a forceout, marking his first save with Houston and the 18th of his season. Machado contributed a two-run homer for the Padres.

Giants 10, Orioles 0
Blake Snell delivered an impressive performance, limiting the Baltimore team to a single hit over six innings while striking out 12 batters, as San Francisco commenced a nine-game road trip with a decisive victory.

Mike Yastrzemski shone at the plate, contributing a home run and a run-scoring single, while LaMonte Wade Jr. and Michael Conforto each added two runs batted in.

This victory marked only the second win for the Giants in their last seven games. The defeat further compounded the Orioles' struggles, as they have now lost seven of their last nine contests while attempting to keep pace with the AL East-leading Yankees.

Twins 4, Guardians 1
Matt Wallner recorded two run-scoring singles, and Willi Castro added a late two-run homer to secure a win for Minnesota against host Cleveland. Twins starter Zebby Matthews allowed five hits but surrendered only one run over 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and issuing one walk.

The combined efforts of Cole Irvin, Cole Sands (9-1), Ronny Henriquez, Jhoan Duran, and Griffin Jax (ninth save) effectively limited the AL Central-leading Guardians to three hits over 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Lane Thomas homered for Cleveland, while Gavin Williams (3-10) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in five innings.
