MLB roundup: Juan Soto lifts Yankees to victory over Red Sox in 10th

Juan Soto (25) delivered a decisive single to conclude the 10th inning, leading the New York Yankees to a narrow 2-1 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Thursday night, marking the beginning of a four-game series.

Soto's hit provided the Yankees with their fourth walk-off win of the season, as he connected with a 2-2 sinker from Josh Winckowski (4-2), sending the ball past shortstop Trevor Story and into left field, allowing pinch runner Jon Berti, who had taken the place of automatic runner Gleyber Torres, to score.

This game-winning hit propelled the Yankees to their fifth victory in seven contests, placing them two games ahead of the idle Baltimore Orioles at the top of the American League East. New York has now equaled its largest lead in the division since reclaiming first place on August 21.

Danny Jensen contributed a solo home run for the Red Sox, who find themselves 4.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the race for the final wild card spot in the American League.

Rockies 4, Tigers 2
Jacob Stallings recorded two doubles and contributed the decisive run in the ninth inning, enabling Colorado to end Detroit's four-game winning streak at home.

Jordan Beck added a solo home run for the Rockies. Seth Halvorsen (1-0) achieved his first career victory with a scoreless inning of relief, while Tyler Kinley secured his 12th save by pitching a flawless ninth inning.

Detroit's starting pitcher, Tarik Skubal, permitted one run and four hits, striking out six over six innings. Spencer Torkelson accounted for both runs for the Tigers with a double in the fourth inning.

Cardinals 6, Reds 1
Brendan Donovan launched a two-run home run, and Masyn Winn also homered and scored twice, leading St. Louis to a victory over Cincinnati.

Cardinals' starter Sonny Gray (13-9) allowed one run on two hits and two walks across six innings, recording nine strikeouts. This performance marked a significant turnaround for Gray, who had previously lost two starts against the Reds this season, yielding 12 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits in 9 1/3 innings. JoJo Romero secured the final four outs to earn his first save.

Reds starter Jakob Junis gave up one run on three hits in five innings, striking out three without issuing any walks. Reliever Carson Spiers (5-6) was charged with the loss.

Astros 6, Athletics 3
Jon Singleton delivered a crucial go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, propelling Houston to a victory over Oakland and preventing a three-game sweep.

Following Singleton's pivotal hit, Jake Meyers contributed with an RBI double, and Jason Heyward was intentionally walked before Mauricio Dubon added two more runs with a single, effectively sealing the game against Oakland.

The Astros' eighth-inning surge came against T.J. McFarland (2-3) and Grant Holman, with McFarland recording just one out and Holman two, as both relievers were charged with two runs.

Houston's starter, Framber Valdez, was on track for his seventh win in nine starts until Brent Rooker equalized the score at 2-2 with a solo home run in the eighth off reliever Ryan Pressly (2-3).
