MLB roundup: Manny Machado ties Padres' career home run mark in win

Manny Machado achieved a remarkable feat by hitting two home runs, thereby equaling the Padres' franchise record for career home runs, as San Diego triumphed over the San Francisco Giants with a score of 5-1 on Friday.

Machado's second home run of the evening, marking his 25th of the season, ascended into the second deck in left field to commence the bottom of the eighth inning. This home run represented his 163rd with the Padres, thus tying Nate Colbert's long-standing record from 50 years ago.

Michael King (12-8) struck out eight batters over six innings, allowing only one run on six hits and a walk against San Francisco. Additionally, three relievers maintained a hitless performance during the final three innings.

With this victory, San Diego (81-62) made significant progress in the National League playoff race, increasing their lead over Arizona for the top wild-card position by one-and-a-half games, following the Diamondbacks' 8-0 defeat to Houston.

Rookie Mason Black (0-3) suffered the loss after yielding six hits and four runs in 4 2/3 innings, during which he issued one walk and recorded six strikeouts. The Giants (69-73) experienced their fifth loss in six games.

In another matchup, the Yankees defeated the Cubs 3-0. Luis Gil, along with three relievers, collaborated to allow only one hit as New York commenced a three-game series against Chicago with a shutout victory.

Austin Wells contributed two runs with a single, while Aaron Judge added an RBI double for the Yankees, who ended a two-game losing streak. Gil (13-6) permitted just one hit and struck out seven over six innings, walking two while throwing 89 pitches in his return from the injured list.

Cody Bellinger's double in the fourth inning was the only hit recorded by the Cubs (72-69), who have now lost three of their last four games. Chicago's starting pitcher, Jordan Wicks (2-3), allowed three runs on five hits, accompanied by four walks and four strikeouts over five innings.

Orioles 2 Rays 0
Dean Kremer delivered an impressive performance, pitching six no-hit innings, while Gunnar Henderson contributed with another home run, leading Baltimore to a victory over Tampa Bay in the first game of a three-game series.

Kremer (7-9) recorded seven strikeouts and issued three walks during his outstanding outing before requiring relief. The Orioles have secured three wins in their last four games at home. Henderson's 36th home run of the season was a solo shot in the sixth inning, and he accounted for two of Baltimore's four hits.

Shane Baz (2-3) provided a commendable effort for the Rays, pitching six innings and allowing two runs, one of which was earned. He surrendered two hits, issued three walks, and struck out three batters.

Guardians 3 Dodgers 1
Matthew Boyd showcased another solid performance, while Andres Gimenez hit a crucial home run in the sixth inning, propelling Cleveland to a win against Los Angeles in the first game of a three-game series featuring division leaders.

In his fifth start since returning from Tommy John surgery, Boyd (2-1) limited the Dodgers to one run on three hits over six innings, recording no walks and six strikeouts. Brayan Rocchio contributed with a home run in the eighth inning for Cleveland.

Shohei Ohtani hit his 45th home run for the Dodgers, complementing his 46 stolen bases. Rookie right-hander Landon Knack (2-3) allowed two runs on three hits over six innings, with one walk and eight strikeouts.
