MLB roundup: Marlins shake off shocking start to season by clobbering Cardinals

Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Nick Gordon both hit three-run homers in the opening inning, propelling the Miami Marlins to a 10-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. This win marked the Marlins' first victory of the season.

Jake Burger and Josh Bell contributed with two runs each, while Luis Arraez had an impressive 4-for-5 performance with three runs scored. The Marlins, who had previously suffered nine consecutive losses, finally secured a win.

Marlins' starting pitcher Max Meyer (1-0) limited the Cardinals to just one run on three hits over six innings, securing his first major league win. He recorded three strikeouts and only allowed one walk.

On the other hand, St. Louis' starter Kyle Gibson (1-1) struggled, giving up seven runs on seven hits in six innings. Despite Nolan Gorman's two home runs and three RBIs, the Cardinals fell short in the end.

Pirates edged out the Orioles with a final score of 3-2 in a game filled with dramatic moments. The game-winning play came in the ninth inning when Edward Olivares hit a ball up the middle with the bases loaded.

Shortstop Gunnar Henderson made an impressive sliding stop and tagged second for the second out, but his throw to first in an attempt to complete a game-ending double play went wide right and out of play. This error allowed the winning run to score for the Pirates.

On the Orioles' side, Ryan Mountcastle had a strong performance, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. However, it wasn't enough to secure the victory.

Moving on to the Astros vs. Rangers game, Ronel Blanco continued his impressive pitching streak after throwing a no-hitter in his previous start. Blanco delivered six innings of one-hit shutout ball, helping Houston defeat Texas 3-1 in Arlington. Yordan Alvarez contributed to the Astros' win with a three-run homer.

Blanco started the game with five and two-thirds hitless innings, but Texas' Adolis Garcia ended the no-hit bid with a sharp single up the middle. Blanco finished his outing with a total of 90 pitches, retiring Evan Carter on a flyout to center to complete his strong performance.

In the Yankees vs. Blue Jays matchup, Giancarlo Stanton played a pivotal role in New York's 8-3 victory. Stanton hit a grand slam in the third inning, extending the Yankees' lead and contributing to their impressive 8-2 record.

Anthony Volpe also had a standout performance for the Yankees, with three hits, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Jake Cousins picked up the win in relief of starter Luis Gil, who recorded eight strikeouts in 4 and one-third innings but also gave up two runs on two hits and four walks.

Overall, it was an eventful day in baseball with exciting plays and standout performances from various players.
