MLB roundup: Mets rally in 9th to beat Tigers and split doubleheader

In the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday, Pete Alonso's game-tying homer in the ninth inning and Tyrone Taylor's walk-off RBI single secured a 2-1 victory for the New York Mets against the Detroit Tigers.
Despite a strong performance from a trio of Detroit pitchers, Alonso managed to hit Alex Faedo's second pitch over the center-field wall.
Following Alonso's homer, Brett Baty drew a six-pitch walk and advanced to second on Starling Marte's bunt. Baty then scored easily on Taylor's single to left. With this win, the Mets improved their record to 1-5, avoiding an 0-6 start for the first time since 1963.
On the other hand, the Tigers were aiming to achieve a 6-0 start for the first time since 2015. Reed Garrett, who pitched three scoreless innings of relief, earned the win (1-0) for the Mets, while starter Jose Butto allowed one run on three hits and three walks, striking out six over six innings.
Javier Baez contributed to the Tigers' offense with a second-inning RBI single and a stolen base, but the team struggled to get runners into scoring position, with only five reaching throughout the game.
Gio Urshela recorded three hits, including a two-run single that concluded a three-run 11th inning, for the visiting Detroit team. Despite being down by three runs, the Tigers managed to overcome the deficit and secure a victory against New York in the first game of the doubleheader.
Colt Keith broke the 3-3 tie with a one-out run-scoring double, propelling the Tigers to victory. This win marked their fifth consecutive win, which is the longest season-opening winning streak for Detroit since their 6-0 start in 2016.
Andy Ibanez contributed with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to put the Tigers on the scoreboard, while Riley Greene hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning.
The Mets' Francisco Alvarez had a two-run double, and Brett Baty added a single with an RBI. On the pitching side, Adrian Houser allowed only one run on three hits and three walks, while striking out three batters over five-plus innings.
