MLB roundup: Orioles top Yanks in Gerrit Cole's '24 debut, Cubs edge Giants

Cedric Mullins delivered an RBI single in the 10th inning against Clay Holmes, 31, as the Baltimore Orioles managed to secure a 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday night.

Despite squandering a four-run lead, the Orioles emerged victorious, spoiling Gerrit Cole's season debut. Mullins broke the tie with a bloop single to centre field, scoring Anthony Santander. After stealing third, Mullins extended the lead to 7-5 when a throw by catcher Jose Trevino went awry.

Cole, making his first start since recovering from a right elbow injury, allowed two runs on three hits over four-plus innings. He recorded five strikeouts and one walk in his 62-pitch outing.

The Yankees, playing without Aaron Judge, suffered their fourth loss in six games. Judge was sidelined as a precautionary measure following a hand injury sustained during Tuesday's game.

Cubs 6, Giants 5
In his first start in over a month, Kyle Hendricks showcased his skills by striking out a season-high eight batters, leading the Chicago Cubs to a victory over the visiting San Francisco Giants in the decisive game of their three-game series.

Hendricks (1-4) was exceptional on the mound, holding the Giants to just one run on two hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings. This impressive performance marked his first start since May 17. Contributing to the Cubs' success, Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson both had two hits, including back-to-back solo home runs in the fourth inning.

However, San Francisco didn't go down without a fight. In the eighth inning, Jorge Soler hit a grand slam, narrowing the gap to just one run. Unfortunately for the Giants, right-hander Spencer Bivens (1-1) took the loss.

Overall, it was a thrilling game that showcased the Cubs' resilience and Hendricks' dominance on the mound.

The Atlanta Braves dominated the Detroit Tigers with a final score of 7-0. Sean Murphy showcased his power by hitting two home runs, while Reynaldo Lopez delivered an impressive performance on the mound, pitching five scoreless innings.

This victory not only secured a shutout for Atlanta but also completed a sweep of the three-game series against Detroit. The Braves are currently on a winning streak, having triumphed in their last three games and six out of their past seven.

On the other hand, the Tigers have suffered four consecutive losses. Murphy's outstanding performance included going 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in four runs, scoring three times, and achieving the fourth multi-homer game of his career.

His first home run came in the third inning, a two-run shot over the brick wall in right field, marking his first career hit against Tigers' starting pitcher Tarik Skubal (8-3). He then added another two-run homer in the fifth inning.
