MLB roundup: Padres rally from eight-run deficit to beat Cubs, Yankees cruise

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning, capping the San Diego Padres' comeback from an eight-run deficit to defeat the visiting Chicago Cubs 9-8 on Monday.

The eighth inning began with Jackson Merrill drawing a walk from reliever Hector Neris. Despite Neris and closer Adbert Alzolay (1-1) retiring the next two batters, Tatis seized the opportunity and crushed a hanging slider deep into the left field seats. The estimated distance of his fourth home run of the year was an impressive 376 feet.

Reliever Wandy Peralta (1-0) played a crucial role in securing the victory, pitching a scoreless eighth inning.

Robert Suarez then closed out the game with a flawless ninth inning, earning his fourth save of the year. This loss marked only the second defeat for the Cubs in their last eight games.

On the pitching front, Cubs starter Javier Assad put up a solid performance, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven in five-plus innings.

However, Padres starter Yu Darvish struggled, lasting only three innings and giving up four runs on four hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.

The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers with a final score of 10-8 in an exciting game. Elly De La Cruz had an exceptional performance, hitting a 450-foot home run to centre field and delivering an electrifying inside-the-parker.

This was a significant game for De La Cruz as he had three hits, marking his first multi-hit game of the season.

The Reds gained a much-needed boost from De La Cruz's inside-the-park homer in the seventh inning, helping them maintain their lead after the Brewers made a comeback from an 8-0 deficit.

Graham Ashcraft started strong, allowing only an infield single over the first four innings. However, he struggled in the later innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits. Nevertheless, the Reds held on to secure the victory.
