MLB roundup: Pirates stun Giants with late outburst and Gonzales walk-off

A 7-6 victory was secured by the Pittsburgh Pirates over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, thanks to a walk-off RBI single by Nick Gonzales in the 10th inning.

After Pittsburgh tied the score with four runs in the ninth, Gonzales delivered a single up the middle on the first pitch from Erik Miller, bringing in automatic runner Michael A. Taylor from second base.

San Francisco initially held a 6-2 lead before Pittsburgh's late four-run rally forced the game into extra innings. Thairo Estrada and Matt Chapman hit home runs for the Giants, but their four-game winning streak came to an end.

In the ninth inning, the Pirates loaded the bases with one out and Ji Hwan Bae singled in a run against Camilo Doval. Andrew McCutchen hit a ground ball that was mishandled by shortstop Marco Luciano, allowing Yasmani Grandal to score from third base.

Jared Triolo scored to narrow the gap to 6-5 on Bryan Reynolds' groundout, and then the Pirates tied the score with Oneil Cruz's RBI double to right field. David Bednar pitched a scoreless 10th inning for Pittsburgh, securing the victory.

In another game, the Houston Astros defeated the Los Angeles Angels 6-5 in 10 innings. Kyle Tucker had his second multi-homer game in three days and scored the winning run when Jeremy Pena delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning. Carlos Estevez suffered the loss as Pena's single brought in Tucker. Josh Hader earned the win in relief for Houston, striking out four over two perfect innings.

Griffin Canning started for the Angels and pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks. Cristian Javier started for the Astros but struggled over four innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits. Javier walked three and struck out one.

Bryce Harper powered the Phillies to a win with a solo home run and a double, while Ranger Suarez continued his undefeated streak, improving to 9-0 after seven impressive innings.

Alec Bohm, Kyle Schwarber, and JT Realmuto each contributed with two hits, and Bohm drove in two runs, helping Philadelphia secure their fourth consecutive victory. For the Rangers, Corey Seager hit a solo homer, and Derek Hill and Jonah Heim each had two hits. Marcus Semien added an RBI double.

Jose Ramirez and David Fry each belted two-run homers, leading the Guardians to a narrow victory over the Mets and extending their winning streak to five games. Emmanuel Clase recorded his 15th save, working around a one-out single in the ninth inning.

Nick Sandlin (4-0) picked up the win with two-thirds of an inning in relief. The Mets, with a homer from Mark Vientos, have now lost the first two games of the three-game series and are struggling with a 9-19 record in their last 28 games.

Andrew Abbott pitched seven scoreless innings, leading the Reds to a shutout victory against the Padres. Abbott (3-4) allowed only four singles and didn't let any baserunner reach third base, earning his second win in his last seven starts. Fernando Cruz and Alexis Diaz completed the shutout, with Diaz securing his eighth save.

Elly De La Cruz doubled in one of the two unearned runs in the second inning. For the Padres, Fernando Tatis Jr. singled in the first inning for his 500th career hit. Joe Musgrove, in his return from the injured list, allowed two unearned runs over three innings, throwing 66 pitches.
