MLB roundup: Red Sox hit back-to-back home runs twice in win over Orioles

Rob Refsnyder and Tyler O'Neill each hit consecutive home runs in both the third and eighth innings, contributing significantly to the Boston Red Sox's 12-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.

By hitting home runs in the first inning off Baltimore's Cade Povich and again in the eighth against Cole Irvin, Refsnyder and O'Neill became the second duo in Red Sox history to achieve two sets of back-to-back home runs in a single game, a feat previously accomplished by Mo Vaughn and Tim Naehring on April 19, 1994.

In this game, Refsnyder recorded four hits and drove in five runs. O'Neill and Rafael Devers each contributed three hits for the Red Sox, while Ceddanne Rafaela added two hits and four RBIs. Boston's starting pitcher, Brayan Bello (13-7), allowed two runs on three hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Povich (2-8) surrendered four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. For Baltimore, Anthony Santander hit his 40th home run of the season and recorded three RBIs.

In another matchup, the Cleveland Guardians triumphed over the Chicago White Sox with a score of 5-3. Rookie Joey Cantillo nearly achieved a perfect game, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning, while David Fry and Bo Naylor each hit home runs for the visiting team.

Cantillo, who was recalled from Triple-A Columbus earlier in the day, retired the first 20 batters he faced until Andrew Benintendi broke the streak with a single in the seventh inning.

Cantillo (1-3) finished the game allowing one run and two hits over seven innings, striking out ten without issuing any walks. Emmanuel Clase secured his 43rd save. Bryan Ramos recorded his first career home run for the White Sox, while opener Jared Shuster (1-4) allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Reds 1, Braves 0
Nick Martinez delivered an impressive performance, pitching seven innings on Monday to secure a victory for Cincinnati against Atlanta. This match was a rescheduled game from July 24.

The only run of the game came in the second inning when Ty France hit a double to the opposite field, bringing home TJ Friedl. Martinez (8-6) demonstrated remarkable control, retiring 17 consecutive batters until Matt Olson managed to reach base with an infield single in the seventh inning. He allowed only two hits throughout the game.

On the other hand, Charlie Morton (8-8) pitched 6 2/3 innings for Atlanta, giving up one run on six hits and two walks, resulting in the team falling behind the New York Mets in the competition for the final National League wildcard position.

Yankees 10, Royals 4
Austin Wells provided a pivotal moment in the seventh inning with a three-run homer, contributing to New York's victory over Kansas City. He finished the game with four RBIs.

Additionally, Alex Verdugo hit a two-run homer, helping the Yankees achieve a total of 12 hits and secure their third win in four games. Gleyber Torres also had a notable performance with three hits and an RBI. Yankees starter Carlos Rodon allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings.

For the Royals, Salvador Perez and Hunter Renfroe both hit home runs, but their four-game winning streak came to an end. Perez had an outstanding game, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs.

Phillies 2, Rays 1
Kody Clemens delivered a crucial RBI single through the right side with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning, leading Philadelphia to a narrow victory over Tampa Bay.

Clemens had struggled in his previous 13 at-bats before coming through against Garrett Cleavinger. Kyle Schwarber contributed with his 34th home run, marking his sixth in the last seven games, while Cristopher Sanchez pitched six scoreless innings, helping the Phillies avoid a third consecutive loss.

Brandon Lowe managed to tie the game with a pinch-hit homer in the top of the ninth for the Rays, who had not allowed a hit until Schwarber's sixth-inning home run. Yandy Diaz also added two hits for Tampa Bay.
