MLB roundup: Rookie Gavin Stone impresses as Dodgers blank White Sox

Gavin Stone, a rookie, delivered an outstanding performance on the mound against the Chicago White Sox. In a complete-game shutout, he limited the White Sox to just four hits.

Stone, who had never pitched more than seven innings in his previous 18 starts, showcased his strength and skill as the game progressed.

With a record of 9-2, he did not issue any walks and struck out seven batters, matching his career high.

Stone retired 10 and nine consecutive White Sox hitters during different parts of the game, contributing to the Los Angeles Dodgers' four-game winning streak.

Throughout the series, Chicago struggled with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-17 and being outscored 11-3. The White Sox have now lost five consecutive home games and seven of their last eight games overall.

Shohei Ohtani, on the other hand, made history by driving in at least one run in his 10th consecutive game, setting a franchise record.

This achievement surpassed the previous record held by four other Dodgers players who had RBIs in nine straight games.

Mariners 5, Rays 2
Seattle Mariners secured a victory against the Tampa Bay Rays, concluding their disappointing nine-game road trip with a 3-6 record.

Cal Raleigh's powerful three-run homer in the sixth inning, his 14th of the season, propelled the Mariners to a 5-2 win.

The homer, which traveled an impressive 422 feet, was hit off reliever Shawn Armstrong (2-2) and gave Seattle the lead for good. George Kirby (7-5) delivered an exceptional performance on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing only one run on a peculiar infield single.

With seven strikeouts and no walks, Kirby showcased his skill and contributed to the Mariners' victory.

Pirates 6, Reds 1

Luis Ortiz delivered an impressive performance in his first start of the season, pitching six solid innings to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Rowdy Tellez and Andrew McCutchen both hit home runs to contribute to the Pirates' win.

Jason Delay also played a crucial role by driving in two runs. With this win, the Pirates secured the three-game series against the Reds. Ortiz, who last started on September 28, 2023, allowed only one run on four hits while striking out seven batters and issuing no walks.

On the other hand, Graham Ashcraft suffered the loss for the Reds in his first start since being called up from Triple-A.

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Cleveland Guardians with a score of 4-2. Gunnar Henderson, Cedric Mullins, and Ryan O'Hearn hit home runs to secure the win, breaking a five-game losing streak for the Orioles.

Despite a strong debut by Cleveland rookie Jhonkensy Noel, who hit a home run in his first big-league at-bat, the Guardians fell short of completing a series sweep. Gabriel Arias also homered for the Guardians. Noel ended the game 1-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Cleveland's starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco allowed two runs on six hits in five innings.

Baltimore's Grayson Rodriguez pitched seven innings, giving up two runs and five hits while striking out four batters. Rodriguez earned his fourth win in the last five starts.

The Philadelphia Phillies emerged victorious over the Detroit Tigers with a final score of 6-2. Brandon Marsh showcased an impressive performance, accumulating four hits, including a two-run homer, and driving in four runs.

Bryson Stott contributed to the Phillies' success by scoring three runs. The team managed to win two out of the three games in the series. Bryce Harper continued his impressive hitting streak, which now stands at 11 games, with a single in the ninth inning.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Spencer Turnbull, who was facing his former team for the first time, had to leave the game early due to shoulder soreness.

On the Tigers' side, Matt Vierling had a notable performance, hitting a solo homer and a double while scoring both runs for his team.

Andy Ibanez also contributed with an RBI single. Keider Montero, who was called up from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day, struggled on the mound, giving up five runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings.
